Utah Resident Returns to his Roots in Marathon Run

Colby Papenfuss celebrated the return to his roots when the Utah resident captured the Buffalo Run half marathon Saturday morning in St. Ignatius.

Papenfuss has multiple ties to the area and said he enjoyed returning to his roots.

Papenfuss, who recently captured the Boston Marathon and ran it in under three hours, said he enjoyed the atmosphere at the St. Ignatius Buffalo Run.

“I visit St. Ignatius every year,” Papenfuss said. “I haven’t tried to run or train recently. In the past, I have run five or seven miles a day but the past two months I haven’t trained.”

Papenfuss, whose family grew up in St. Ignatius and his great grandfather Kurt Papenfuss was one of the people instrumental in the construction of Kerr Dam, said the Buffalo Run was one of his favorite races of the year.

Papenfuss’s sister Sydnee also competed and won in the one-mile race.

Dolly Frey, one of the event organizers, said they get contestants from all over the country with ties to St. Ignatius to return home and run in the Buffalo Run.

“It’s a big community event that is very family oriented and family based,” Frey said. “I don’t know the exact numbers, but on average we’ve had over 100 participate in the event each year.”

The Buffalo Run, now in its 36th year of existence, has grown over the years, according to Frey.

“It’s actually changed a lot from when we started because no one but the runners was here,” Frey said. “Now you have people (from the community) involved in this event every year.”
