Fifth-grade students from around the county took part once again in a contest showing their interpretation on tobacco and its affects on the human body.

“Tar Wars” is a national tobacco-free education program from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), designed for fourth- through sixth-grade students.

The program consists of a one-hour presentation that is given by volunteer healthcare professionals and educators.

Dr. Cara Harrop is Lake County’s healthcare volunteer and the Lake County Public Health Tobacco Prevention and Education Program facilitates her speaking engagements.

All fifth-grade students in Arlee, Charlo, Polson, Ronan and St. Ignatius public schools were able to listen to Harrop speak and then participate in a follow-up poster contest.

A total of 245 students out of approximately 400 participated.

This year’s 2018 Lake County Tar Wars Poster Champion is Sasha McCoy from Polson Middle School.

Second place was taken by Clarissa Allen, also of Polson SCHOOL, and Amelia Cronk of St. Ignatius won third place.

Other winners around the county include: Arlee City Champion Dylan Lovejoy; Charlo City Champion Kayreen Dumont; and Ronan City Champion Hanna Lytton.

Lake County ReACT students and Lake County Public Health employees judged the poster contest.
