The Polson Lil Lakers’ 10-U softball team’s coaching staff has a difficult task – to make sure their undefeated team doesn’t fall victim to complacency.

The Lil Lakers’ staff has succeeded at keeping their team on the task at hand to capture a state title.

The high run production contributed to the Lil Lakers’ accelerated confidence. The Polson 10U team outscored their opponents in the Frenchtown Tournament 56-6 and 67-8 in the Butte Tournament.

“I think all of the girls get along so good, they’ve just clicked (together) and they know what each other is going to do as the play is happening,” 10-U Lil Lakers’ co-coach Lyle Smith said. “That communication is the biggest key to going into state and the spooky thing (about their success) is the girls are getting some big heads on them.”

The Lil’ Lakers continued to carry on.

“In the eight games previous to that, these girls went out on the field, they’ve put the hammer down and worked hard,” Smith said. “They don’t let up and in the championship game against Frenchtown, they scored some runs. Their defense is a lot better than we’ve seen in Frenchtown and the bats came alive to score five or six runs in one inning.”

The Polson 10-U coaching staff is aware when they get to the state tournament, their competition level will increase dramatically.

“When we went over to Great Falls, we faced an Avalanche team out of Missoula and tied them 1-1,” Smith said. “We played them in the championship game and they beat us 3-1. There was an east Oregon team and they put a pretty big whooping on us. Juan, Jim and I can’t let up during practices. We can’t let up during these games and the girls haven’t. We’ve run-ruled the majority of the teams that we have played.

In two weeks the Lil’ Lakers 10-U team will embark on the state tournament and Smith said he knows the competition “won’t be easy.”

“They just put all of the good teams and weaker teams together,” Smith said. “In the course on Sunday, all of the teams of the silver bracket will be all weaned out and teams like Polson will be playing better competition in the gold bracket.

Smith said a characteristic his team has is grit.

“Our team is batting and they keep battling back (when they have adversity),” Smith said. “The other team comes back and scores some runs. Then the girls get pretty upset and say ‘this isn’t happening.’ They come out (after trailing) and get after it.”

During the 14-U championship, Kallie Finkbeiner was a perfect four-for-four at the plate, hitting for the cycle (1B,2B,3B,HR) that included a home run in the second inning. Liz Scabbyrobe was robbed of an extra basse hit when the outfielder snared it at the fenceline.

Finkeiner’s efforts allowed the 14-U to capture the 14-U Softball Sizzler Thursday through Saturday at the Frenchtown High School softball diamonds.

Kallie Finkbeiner got her Lakers on the board with a first inning RBI double, which the Billings Force Boondoggle countered in the bottom half of the inning. The score remained deadlocked until the Lakers erupted in the top half of the fourth when Turqoise Pierre doubled to start off a rally. Gianna Fyant then singled, followed by a SaVanna Carpentier double for a deuce. Liz Scabbyrobe and Aubrey Marshall then singled, which leadoff Anna Vert cleaned up with a two RBI single that put the Lakers firmly in control.
