A local nonprofit is another step closer to its goal of expansion.

The 7th Avenue Skatepark Association has announced it has been named a recipient of The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation for $20,000, Jesse Vargas, an organizer of the nonprofit, said.

Another grant for $12,000 could be in the park’s future, from the Polson Rotary Club, Vargas said. The group has until Aug. 11 to sell 150 raffle tickets at $25 per ticket.

Not including the Rotary Club grant, Vargas said that the park has raised approximately $40,000 against a goal of $222,000.

Currently, the park on Seventh Avenue West in Polson is 12,000-square foot facility and will be double in size.

Vargas said that the group anticipates construction by fall of 2018.

In the meantime, Vargas said that a summer kick-off barbecue will take place in June, which will soon be announced.

The barbecue, he explained, is a gathering to get people out of the house and “get the rust off” skating equipment.

In August, the annual Skate Jam will be held.
