The Polson High School girls’ tennis team captured their 11th Divisional crown in the last 12 years under Lady Pirates’ head coach Bob Hislop.

Lady Pirates top singles player Shea McGuinness overcame a late-season injury to capture the singles divisional crown.

“She was the No. 1 seed and she was a little injured going into last week’s tournament,” Hislop said. “She did very, very well obviously. She did what she needed to do and played very well in the championship round.”

Though many expected McGuinness to capture the singles title, the big pleasant surprise, according to Hislop and his coaching staff, was the play of their No. 4 player Josie Peterson.

Peterson, along with Mcguinness, qualified for the Montana High School Activities Association match May 24-25 that will be split between Polson and Ronan High School.

“(Peterson) was fourth in singles, which as a head coach is something that pleases me to no end,” Hislop said. “She is a wonderful girl and when she started out playing tennis, many people would not have given her a chance for this accomplishment. Her making it to state is very, very special and a big statement.”

Hislop credited Peterson’s work ethic for being able to achieve this accomplishment.

“Some players aren’t as good of athletes as others,” Hislop said. “However, Josie is a very intelligent girl and takes coaching very well. In matches, you can give her ideas and she’ll run with it and do it. She made it to State because of a lot of her hard work and it paid off.”

Hislop and his coaching staff work tirelessly to find the right combinations of doubles partners and through experience and dedication, he and his staff tends to find the right combos.

With seniors Kyler Lundeen and Berkeley Ellis, he has succeeded in finding the right combination of doubles partners, and the combo has now successfully qualified for State.

“I get questions about it all of the time,” Hislop said. “Berkeley Ellis is very mature. Her family is very much into sports and they do everything (sports related). She is very mature, has a lot of experience in the sports venue and she handles the situation very well.”

Pirates’ trio punches

ticket to State

Polson tennis player Johnny Moore has never fallen victim to complacency. Now, the senior and now No. 1 rated Polson tennis player will have a chance to showcase the results of his dedication at this year’s Montana Activities Association State tournament May 24-25 at Polson and Ronan High School.

“(Moore) has put in tons of time in the off season and in the regular season,” Hislop said. “I thought about putting him at doubles (at one point) but singles is his love.”

Moore struggled through a knee injury during Divisionals and just barely missed out on the championship singles match with a closely-contested semifinal loss.

Moore had a 5-4 lead in the semifinals and just struggled to close the deal.

“We had to monitor his knee and shoulder and this week looks good (headed into state),” Hislop said. “It was very nice to see him there and I think he is now in a good place for state.”

Senior Carson McDaniel and Joe McDonald were a doubles tandem that was put together late in the season by the Pirates’ coaching staff. That move paid dividends.

McDaniel and McDonald defeated their teammates Kaiden Forman Webster and Sam Schutz in order to qualify for State.

“They played very well throughout the tournament,” Hislop said.

Chiefs send tandem to state

The Ronan Chiefs edoubles team of Coleman Taylor and Thomas Yellowbird qualifed for the Class A state tournament and will have a chance represent Ronan in their home town at the Class A state tournament.

This marks the first year Ronan transitioned from Class A to Class B.
