Vikings, Lady Vikings send several to state
Charlo High School track and football star Landers Smith seems to be the subject of conversation whenever Charlo athletics are being talked about and he did nothing to change that trend at the Class C Divisional track meet Thursday and Friday afternoon at Frenchtown High School.
Smith placed in the top five in three different events at MHSA Western Class C Divisional track meet. Smith finished in the top five in one individual event and two relay events.
Smith finished fifth in the 200-meter relay recording a time of 24.06 seconds. Smith and his football teammates are known for their speed on the field and on the track. The Vikings finished third in the 4X100 relay with a time of 45.83 seconds and second in the 4X400 relay with a time of 3 minutes, 38.69 seconds.
The 4X100 relay team consisted of Garett Vaughan, Brock Tomlin, Toby Odom and Smith, all fixtures on their football team that were perennial playoff contenders since this group’s arrival.
The 4X400 relay team that consists of Bridger Foust, Toby Odom, Isaiah Allick and Smith qualified for State with a second place finish.
All season, Charlo distance runner Wills Degrandpre has known only two places in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter run: first and second. Degrandpe continued this trend against fierce competition at Divisionals.
Degrandpre finished second in the 1,600-meter run recording a time of 4 minutes, 44.98 seconds and set a personal record for second place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 19.40 seconds. The winner in the 1,600-meter run was Logan Maughan, out of Seeley-Swan, who recorded a time of 4 minutes, 43.89 seconds and Ben Morrison, out of Manhattan Christian, finished with a time of 10 minutes, 17.50 seconds, a personal record.
Like his other Charlo teammates, Toby Odom showcased his talent in the 110-meter hurdles. Odom finished third in the event behind Drummond’s Luke Holland (16.84 seconds) and Valley Christian’s Benjamin Tuinstra, who placed first with a time of 16.23 seconds.
With the finish, Odom secured his spot at the MHSA Class AA and C State meet May 25-26 in Great Falls.
Foust will join his Vikings teammates as a participant in the pole vault. Foust finished fourth and cleared a distance of 10 feet, 6 inches, enough for him to advance to the State track meet.
