America will 'heal to wholeness'
I wrote this letter the morning of election day, Nov. 6, before we had any returns. Let’s see how it applies now that “We The People’s” most recent interests and motivations have been expressed in the voting booth.
America will heal to wholeness. Regardless of what has become a very dangerous-to-our-democracy politically divisive environment, there is a sensible way forward. As Abraham Lincoln declared about our nation in his Gettysburg address: “Government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.”
The Donald Trump presidency has surely cast a new White House style of leadership in America. The preaching of fear, anger and attack is commonplace from our president. Fear and anger are strong human emotions and motivations. They are not helpful, but they are powerful. We have all witnessed this in the lead-up to these midterm elections.
To my way of thinking, trust in the inherent sense of goodness and positive ethical behavior within the vast majority of Americans is essential. It can be ultimately counted upon in moving us forward as a nation “Of the people, by the people, for the people.” And “It shall now perish from the earth.”
