Pirates torpedo Vikings, cage Cats

At Columbia Falls, the visiting Pirates and the host Wildcats played to a scoreless tie through the first half. But coming out of intermission, Polson opened the second half with two quick goals. Class A scoring leader Mack Moderie curled a corner kick into the net for the first tally, then pummeled one in from the pitch a minute later to stake the Pirates to a two goal advantage. Robin Erickson then added some insurance with goal number three during the waning segment of the contest.

The Pirate boys host the visiting Whitefish Bulldogs on Thursday at 7 p.m. for Homecoming, then travel to Libby on Saturday to close out the regular schedule.

Both Mack Moderie and Robin Erickson scored braces (2 goals), while fellow seniors Nico River along with Bridger Wenzel netted solo tallies. Lady Pirates force feline

flounder, vanquish Vals

At Columbia Falls, the visiting Lady Pirates extracted a measure of revenge for previous losses to the WildKats in a scratch-fest of a soccer skirmish. After a scoreless first half of which the lion’s share was played on the Polson side of the field, adjustments were made at intermissioin which were reflected in improved ball movement and shot productivity. Two quick goals, a stalemate tiebreaker by Sophia Moderie and a header hammered home by Ashlee Howell, staked Polson with a two goal advantage. The Lady Pirates continued to apply pressured to the Kat box defended by keeper Avé McDonald, daughter of former CSK tribal attorney Ranald McDonald as well as one time Polson resident. At the other end of the field, the defense forced the Kats to run a soccer version of the “gauntlet” while denying second-leading league goal scorer Josie Windauer (niece of local Windauer Dentistry) room to operate.

The victory was the fruition of a team effort that accentuated aspirations held by senior captain Howell as well as coach Jaime Whealon. The Kats were the team against which Howell sustained her season ending knee injury last year, while that victory was a first the skipper. Coach Whealon was so stoked about the win that he will be sporting pink hair with a purple LP stenciled on back for Homecoming week.

While space does not suffice to acknowledge all player contributions during the course of this contest, mention is made of the superb level of play by Kyla Heiser on the wing, Lilly Armstrong at center defender, Ali Hupka at center mid and Addy Day at left defender.

The Lady Pirates will host Whitefish in their Homecoming game this Thursday at 5 p.m., then travel to Libby on Saturday.
