At St. Ignatius in a county cross classification clash on Friday the 13th, the visiting Lady Vikings of Charlo dialed the operator long distance and completed the call on a trio of triples that contributed to relegating the host Lady Bulldogs to a double digit deficit when their shots fell short of crafting a comparable response in kind.

The middle quarters were played fairlly evenly. Entering the final frame, Mission launched their assault as they rallied to close the gap. Azia Umphrey and Madyson Currie would contribute a quartet each, but Syd Brander would get the hot hand as she drained a trio of treys in the final quarter alone.

Her second would cut the lead to single digits 40-32, her third within two possessions, 45-41, with 28 seconds remaining. After Charlo made a pair of free throws to extend their advantage to a half dozen, Mission set up to cut the lead in half. When difficulties arose in executing the play as it was drawn up, time out was called just as Olivia Garland launched a long range 3-pointer which found nothing but net and would have pulled the Lady Bulldogs within a single possession. But the conversion would amount to naught when officials granted time, much like icing the kicker in a football game.

Mission’s Sydney Brander led all scorers with seven threes, while the Fryberger sisters of Charlo collaborated on 29 points. Lady Viking Liev Smith reeled in 11 boards.

The Mission girls host the Bigfork Vals Friday, Dec. 20, then travel to Troy Saturday.

Charlo clips Clark Fork

Against visiting Clark Fork, the host Lady Vikings put together four frames of double digit point production as they cruised to their fourth straight against the visiting Lady Mountain Cats.

Liev Smith, Carlee Fryberger and Destiny Manuel all notched double figures, while Kassidi Cox had the sharpest eye from beyond the arc. A quintet of Lady Vikings reeled in a handful of rebounds or better.

The Lady Vikings close out the calendar year at home as they host St. Regis Thursday followed by a visit from the Plains Trotters Friday.

Maidens buckle under Bronc barrage, bounce back against Scarlets

At Hamilton, the skirmish between the visiting Maidens and the host Bitterroot Broncs could be distilled down to a tale of two halves. Ronan was highly productive before intermission as they held a narrow edge each of the first two periods.

But once the second half got underway, Hamilton picked up the pace as they flipped the script, outscoring Ronan by a 2:1 margin. Already down one player, another would exit on account of illness, handcuffing the Maiden’s ability to counter as effectively.

Hamilton won the second half battle on the boards, while Ronan was plagued by fouling. Even though the Maidens converted an acceptable percentage at the charity stripe, the Lady Broncs would make better than twice as many, which added further to their coffers aided by offensive rebound putbacks.

Jaylea Lunceford turned in her second double-double of the season for points and rebs. But the remainder of the roster was unable to counter the trio of Hamilton players in double figures that included a tandem among the teens.

At Arlee in a county cross-classification clash, the visiting Class A Maidens were more than the previous Class C adjusting to B Scarlets could handle given their current stage of rebuilding.

The Maidens will hold a pair of doubleheaders as they close out the month of December, hosting Browning on Friday, Dec. 20, then Libby on Saturday, Dec. 21. The Scarlets are idle until after the New Year.

Scarlets capsized by Breakers

At Missoula in the 6B conference opener for both squads, the visiting former Class C Scarlets were overrun by the seasoned veteran Breakers. Last season, Loyola prevailed 70-62 in a close contest in which Arlee led 35-26 at the half and was deadlocked at 47 apiece entering the final frame.

The difference between the two seasons traces to roster attrition. Loyola returned their entire roster from last season that factored into the scoring and then some. Arlee no longer has among their roster 61 of the 62 points scored last season.

The Scarlets will remain idle the final week of December action, but will resume play after the New Year.

Running Lady Indians overrun Pirates

At Browning this past weekend, the visiting Lady Pirates struggled against a barrage of offense by the host Running Lady Indians. Halftime adjustments were made as Polson defense cut Browning scoring in half, while the offense improved by doubling its output.

A pair of seasoned players remain sidelined mending from injury or other extenuating factors.

The Polson girls travel to the Bitterroot this Thursday, Dec. 19, to face the Corvallis Lady Blue Devils, then host the Whitefish Lady Bulldogs on Friday, Dec. 20 at SKC gym.
