At Browning, the visiting Pirates held an edge on the bookend frames, but it was inbetween that the outcome would fall off the shelf.

Even at intermission, a strong third quarter that included a dozen from game leading scorer Blayne DeRoche precariously perched the Pirates on the edge of the plank.

Free throws at the charity stripe would factor large in the outcome as Polson converted less than half that of Browning.

The Pirates host the Corvallis Blue Devils Thursday then host the Whitefish Bulldogs Friday.

Dawgs down Vikes, Christy mints high

At St. Ignatius in a county cross classification clash, the offensive machinery of the host Bulldogs would hum like a well tuned engine, while that of the visiting Vikings sputtered as they struggled to craft a corresponding counter. Try as they may, no luck could be gleaned from Friday the 13th as the Vikings managed to net a mere field goal the duration of the first half as if an invisible shield deflected their efforts. Charlo fortunes improved the second half, but so did those of Mission. The Bulldogs would notch the scoreboard by as many as their visitors had accruee the duration of the contest up to that point.

Jedi Christy took game scoring honors as well as reset the bar for a new varsity career high. He crested the 500-point plateau for varsity career scoring as well as minted a new varsity career high.

The Mission Bulldogs host the Bigfork Vikings in their conference opener on Friday, then travel to Troy Saturday.

Cat claws clip Charlo

At Charlo this past Saturday, an inconsistent Viking first frame would ultimately result in a deficit too deep to overcome.

The remainder of the contest played out fairly evenly, though the visiting Mountain Cats countered Viking incursions to whittle down the deficit.

Phil Marquez led the Vikings with a dozen points, while Tucker Love and Nate Clark collectively contributed another twelve. Dawson Dumont and Coyle Nagy collaborated on another dozen boards.

The Vikings close out the calendar year at home as they host St. Regis Thursday followed by the Plains Horsemen Friday.

Chiefs split

nonconference slate

At Ronan last Thursday, the visiting Bitterroot Broncs of Hamilton would execute a more efficient game through the first three quarters of play as the host Chiefs watched multiple scoring opportunities slip out of their grasp that would have tightened the disparity.

Trailing by mid-teens entering the final frame, the hot hand of Leonard Burke almost singlehandedly erased the deficit when he buried four treys to draw the Chiefs within a single possession 52-55 with 21.6 seconds remaining. A couple of final possessions that had the potential of tightening the score even further would be intercepted by Broncs, forcing Ronan to foul. Hamilton would close out the contest by making just enough free throws.

But in the long run, Hamilton converted twice as many free throws at the line over the duration of the contest. Had the Chiefs shot within a comparable 60th percentile, the game might well have stretched another frame to determine the outcome.

At Arlee in a county cross classification clash this past weekend, the visiting Chiefs and the host Warriors were engaged in a tight battle through the first half with Ronan emerging with a slight edge at intermission.

A big third quarter would spell the difference. A pair of deuces by both Chief Trey Don’t Mix and Warrior Zach Running Crane would counter each other along with a pair of free throws from others. The difference would be a quintet of deuces scored by Ronan’s Zarec Couture that would only be offset by another Warrior bucket to account for the quarter differential.

The Warriors would attempt a final frame rally, but the Chiefs would make enough free throws to hold the charge at bay.

The Chiefs will hold a pair of doubleheaders as they close out the month of December as they host Browning Friday then Libby Saturday, Dec. 21. Arlee is idle until after the New Year.

No three charm third time around

At Arlee for the 6B conference opener for both squads, the visiting Rams exercised some extra motivation to avert engaging in a close contest with the host Warriors.

Last season, Cody Tanner turned a piece of last second heroics when he buried a buzzer beating three to nip Loyola 68-66, capping a rally that saw Arlee erase a deficit as deep as a dozen. Five seasons back, Arlee eeked out an 84-82 overtime victory.

This time around, the Rams took out some extra insurance to ensure against such mayhem arising much like as seen in those humorous televised commercials featuring actor Dean Winters.

Warrior returnees Cody Tanner and Levi Fullerton combined to more than offset the contributions of the top trio of Ram scorers. But bench depth would play its role as ten Loyola players would factor into the scoring column.

Arlee faced Rez rival Ronan over the weekend, then remains idle until after the New Year.
