Scarlets No. 1, Charlo second into 14C District Tourney

Last Tuesday, the Arlee Scarlets traveled to Missoula where they engaged the Class B 10th-ranked Loyola Breakers in a cross-classification clash. The contest was a contrast of two halves, with the Scarlets building a nine point halftime lead. Loyola would counter in the second half, making adjustments on offense while tightening up its defensive press that created multiple Arlee turnovers. Their efforts would result in a tie game at 47 apiece entering the final frame. Thereafter, the Breakers would outscore the Scarlets by the margin of victory.

This past Thursday, the Scarlets hosted Charlo for Arlee Senior Night with the District 14C crown hinging on the outcome. Renowned for their stingy defense, the Lady Vikings came out with a hot shooting hand, closing out the first frame with an 11-0 run that gave them an eight point advantage to start the second period. Charlo led by a half dozen at the half and 38-31 midway through the third quarter when Arlee countered with a 7-0 run to knot the score at 38 apiece entering the final frame. Louetta Conko-Camel would net a pair of free throws to flip the script, giving the Scarlets a 40-39 advantage at the five-minute mark and change.

Charlo would counter with its own 7-0 run that included a pair of dishes from Allie Delaney to Destiny Manuel and a corner triple by Kaitlin Cox. Scarlet Conko-Camel converted a deuce-and-one to pull Arlee within a single possession 43-46, but Charlo went 3-for-5 from the charity stripe and scored on an offensive rebound putback to account for the margin of victory.

Arlee bids farewell to a septet of seasoned seniors in Alyssia Vanderburg, Louetta Conko-Camel, Nellie Desjarlais, Noelle West, Sydni Rogers, Hailey Shepherd and Tomi Brazill.

Although both Arlee and Charlo ended with identical 11-1 district records, the No. 1 seed tilted to the Scarlets on the strength of their 12-point 53-41 victory back in early January. Charlo is seeded second. Arlee has a first-round bye and will face the winner between No. 4 seed Hot Springs and fifth-seeded St. Regis on Friday at 5:15 p.m. at SKC in Pablo. Charlo, seeded second, faces No. 7 Two Eagle River at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Lady Vikings sparkle to end regular season

The Lady Vikings ended the regular schedule on a high note with a pair of crucial conference wins.

The following evening on Friday, the Lady Vikings would host visiting Hot Springs as they honored their seasoned seniors on Senior Night. Trailing after the first frame, the Lady Viking scored in double figures the following frames while holding the Lady Savage Heat to lower point production. The Lady Vikings bid farewell to a trio of seniors in Kaitlin Cox, Allie Delaney and Teaira Truman. The trio have cumulatively amassed more than 1000 points, 800 rebounds, 200 assists and 300 steals in collaboration over the course of their varsity careers.

The win gives both Charlo and Arlee duplicate 11-1 district records, but the score differential of a pair of deuces between their two games favored Arlee with the No. 1 seeding heading into the district tournament.

With the No. 2 seed, Charlo faces seventh-seeded Two Eagle River at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
