Awards were presented in five categories for both the seventh- and eighth-grade classes at the conclusion of Polson Middle School boat races Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the Mission Valley Aquatic Center.

As did the PMS sixth-graders on Feb. 7, advisory team members used a prescribed list of supplies to construct a boat — with the intent of each of them to stay afloat during 50-yard races at MVAC. The students, with direcion from their advisers, used cardboard, glue, spray paint, permanent markers and the key ingredient — duct tape, It was a project as part of the STEAM program, which is Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.

The overall Fastest Finish Award, considering seventh- and eighth-grade vessels, was presented to The Fishermen, whose seventh-grade adviser was Brad Fisher, to conclude the “Duck Boat Dynasty.” They had a very quick time of 56 seconds.

The Ugly Duck was not pretty, but fast, and captured the Fastest Finish Award for eighth-grade teams.

There was a Titanic Award for each grade, given to the teams’ whose boat sunk the fastest.
