Polson netters sweep first day, bounced by Bitterroot

At Polson last weekend, prep tennis conveys a crescendo of kudos to the Pirate coaches and players for having one of the few spring sports venues fully operational for the first meets of the season.

Polson coach Bob Hislop said they put in 250 to 300 hours of removing snow from the six courts over the preceding two week period. “After two weeks of that, the fear was that we would get a couple of rainouts,” Hislop said. “Instead, they’re coping with sunburn.”

Defending singles champion Shea McGuinness and state placer Berkley Ellis both went 4-0 on the weekend. Several matches extended to three sets, some hinging on tiebreakers.

Some among those who participated in this spring’s snow shovel conditioning regimen found that they were more adept at digging themselves out of a hole when they got behind.

Polson netters will host Dillon and Whitefish in a week’s time on the weekend of April 5-6.
