Charlo Vikings beat Heat for District 14C Championship

At Noxon for the District 14C volleyball tournament, the top-seeded Lady Vikings of Charlo would run the gamut of playoff match experiences. First, there would be a tussle with some Devils on Halloween. Next, embark upon a marathon. Then, a meltdown from too much Heat exposure. Following that, perform an athletic exercise to oust Devils. Thereafter, avert getting burned by too close an encounter from excessive Heat.

On Thursday, the Lady Vikings tussled with the host Lady Red Devils of Noxon on their home court. Away games are often frought with risk, but more so when dealing with Devils on Halloween night. Noxon battled into the high teens in the first set, made a game of set two as both teams tallied among the 20s before Charlo settled the third set by doubling up the Devils.

The start of Friday did not go quite according to plan as Charlo would succumb from too much Heat exposure, specifically at the hands of the Lady Savage Heat of Hot Springs. The undefeated semifinal would result in their first loss of the season to a conference opponent.

Charlo’s next match would be a rematch of their opener against Noxon. The host Lady Red Devils were riding the momentum of a five set victory over Plains. Realizing that the Lady Vikings were vulnerable from witnessing an unanticipated loss and further empowered by a home crowd playing on their home court, Noxon put forward their best match of the season against Charlo, the bookend sets both climbing among the teens before the Lady Vikings settled the match with a third set victory.

The win propelled Charlo back on the championship track. But to claim the prize they would have to unsaddle the Lady Savage Heat from the drivers seat by capturing not just the first championship, but a second as well.

Charlo succeeded in forcing a second championship when they swept the first, but the bookend sets were battles that hung in the balance until the margin could be secured.

The first set of the first championship climbed among the 20s for both teams before the Lady Vikings gained an edge at the end. Charlo controlled the tempo during the second set. The third set would extend into extras as Hot Spring sought to carve into the 2-0 set deficit. But Charlo would succeed in getting the final two points for a 26-24 win and the match.

The second championship would seesaw back and forth, Hot Springs easily handling the first set. Charlo would battle back to even the match at one apiece. The Lady Savage Heat would gain the edge at the end in a crucial third set as both teams sought to gain an advantage over the other. Trailing two sets to one, Charlo found another gear as they left Hot Springs in the dust of the fourth set with a convincing 25-9 margin to even the match at two sets apiece.

The finale would come down to a fifth and final set with the outcome determining which team would wear the tiara. The set would be a close one, but Charlo would prevail with a 15-11 margin to win the 2019 District 14C crown.

Carlee Fryberger would lead Lady Viking tallies at the tournament with 73 cumulative kills. Sister Connor Fryberger crested the century plateau for set assists with 121 cumulative sets over the course of five games, while Kira McPhail was a blockin-maniac with 20 cumulative blocks. Destiny Manuel was the defensive diggin dynamo with more than 130 digs. Bella Hawk and Kassidi Cox sizzled from the service line with Hawk serving up 16 too hot to handle potatoes, while Cox smacked 14 can’t-touch-this doozies while setting the table for others with another 56 set assists.

Lady Viking head coach Rhondell Volinkaty was elated about her team’s performance at the tournament, saying, “I am still on cloud nine with how the girls came back from being defeated in the first game against Hotsprings. To be able to come together as a team and play and win three more matches in a day is exhausting and takes alot of heart. My girls showed incredible stamina and were determined to come out on top. Both teams came to play when we got into the championship games. I told the girls to be selfish as a team and prove to themselves that they deserve to be the champions of the conference. They proved it for sure.”

The Lady Vikings will take the top seed into the Western C Divisional to be held at Manhattan Christian November 7-9 and will face Gardiner (14-5) in the opening rounds. At the Manhattan Christian Invitational earlier in the season in a gold bracket quarterfinal, Charlo and Gardiner split their two set series with the Lady Vikings advancing to the semifinal on point differential. Coach Volinkaty anticipates that her Lady Vikings have as good a chance if not better than any team of climbing a few runs on the postseason ladder. “Going into divisional, I am confident each game will be a great competitive contest. We have seen most of the advancing teams at least once this year and I expect to see some really amazing things from my team.”
