Enterprising youth donates summer proceeds toward rink

You may have seen young Zayne Newman’s “Beat the Heat Shaved Ice” stand in front of Oak’s Korean Kitchen on Highway 93 in Polson last summer.
Zayne decided to make some money for a cause he believes in. He and his sister Summer miss hockey since moving back to Polson from Minnesota.
His theme was “Shave some ice to help get some ice” and he set up his enterprise to raise money for the Mission Valley Ice Arena.
Helped by Summer, and friends Corben Carlson and Max Violett, they braved the hotter days of August and raised $500.
They experienced great community support, with some patrons adding donations over and above the $3 price of the beverage.
This isn’t the first time Zayne, Summer, Corben, and Max have teamed up for hockey. The four participated in MVIAA’s Flathead Cherry Classic in 2018.
MVIAA Chair Hilary Lozar thanks the kids, and Oaks Korean Kitchen for providing the supplies.
“It’s determination like this that is driving our project to bring an ice arena to our community,” she said. “When you see kids so motivated, it motivates everyone.”
