Polson Pirates football falls to Libby

Friday during Homecoming, the host Polson Pirates found their hands full contending with the Libby ground game as the visiting Loggers ran the Pirates through the gridiron equivalent of a lumber mill in a 45-6 defeat.

With a roster laden with a big offensive line, inevitable mismatches were bound to be exploited.

Trailing by two tallies, the Pirates countered when quarterback Bo Kelley threw a 70-yard strike to Ryker Wenderoth down the sideline to cut the deficit almost in half before the end of the first frame.

After a subsequent Libby rushing touchdown, Polson put together another promising drive that included a high teen yardage reception by Dugan Davis, followed by a pair of Logan Adler Libby territory.

Down to fourth-and-5, the Pirates converted for another first down just inside the red zone. Back-to-back quarterback keepers yielded fourth-and-1.

But while Polson was making plans to convert another first down, Murphy meddled with a dose of mayhem as the ball snapped over the reach of the quarterback’s outstretched hands, thereby not only turning the ball back over to Libby on downs, but also lending an extra dose of added yardage for the start of their next series.

Polson had another promising drive going in the third quarter after a Ryker Wenderoth 20-yard reception, followed by an Adler run that had the Pirates knocking on the door of the red zone.

But back-to-back penalties had the drive going in reverse, until a sack added further insult to the injury of a fourth and triple decade distance that would have been hard enough to surmount.

“All the credit goes to Libby. As a coaching staff they knew what they were going to get from us and the players executed very well,” coach Kaden Glinsmann said.

Polson hosts the Frenchtown Broncs Friday.
