Davis' late touchdown helps Polson Pirates swat Bitterroot

At Stevensville, the visiting Pirates would play the role of spoiler for host Homecoming hopes by breaking a scoreless tie in the final frame, then fending off a swarm of Yellowjacket activity the rest of the way in an 8-0 win.

Dugan Davis showed no ill effects from a stinger he sustained from a collision with a Frenchtown Bronc the prior week that resulted in him being carted off in an ambulance as a precautionary measure. Davis punched in the pigskin for six, then tacked on the points after with a conversion run.

The Pirates knocked on the door of the end zone during the second quarter when Bo Kelley connected with Jarrett Wilson for a 55-yard strike that advanced the ball halfway within the red zone to the 10-yard line.

But thereafter, the drive stalled and the Yellowjackets took over on downs.

Stevensville connected with a 70-yard bomb that had them knocking at the door of Polson’s end of the field in an effort to send the game into overtime. But the Pirates would ward off the counter attempt when the defense dug in to deny.

Coach Kaden Glinsmann credited Stevi Defensive Coordinator Andy Sieges for the game plan that hampered much of what Polson was trying to execute at various junctures of the contest.

But Glinsmann was most effusive about the manner in which his Pirate gridders played.

“I’m so proud of our young men for battling through such a close game. They’re was never any doubt in their minds. They just kept playing. We have such great leaders on this team, everyone contributed.”

Polson travels to Butte to face the Butte Central Maroons on Friday.

In other Mission Valley football action:

Frenchtown 44,

Ronan 6

At Frenchtown, the visiting Chiefs experienced what many a team has encountered when they try to rein in the fourth-ranked Frenchtown Broncs: an allergic reaction to hazardous hooves. The main proponent of Bronc hoof infliction has been the rushing of running back Jace Klucewich, who touched up the Chief defense for three TDs. It was apparent that Frenchtown has also been trying to expand their vaunted ground game into a more multi-dimensional force that includes an air assault.

It took the Chiefs a few quarters to make adjustments, but they were able to notch the scoreboard as Eric Dolence found Kolby Reum for a short yardage reception that netted six after halftime. While some of the reduction in scoring might be attributed to substitutions, nevertheless Ronan managed to outscore Frenchtown the duration of the second half.

Much like one might go about dissecting a defense or breaking down the components behind a successful play, coach Matt Detwiler has scrutinized what underlies the current success of the Frenchtown Bronc and Libby Logger football programs.

Detwiler elaborated, “Three years ago, Libby won a single game against Troy and Frenchtown won two. In three short years, these programs have had players stay and grow in their programs. That’s what I’m looking to build here in Ronan .... what we can become if kids are willing to put the time in.”

As the regular schedule begins winding to its conclusion, Ronan is within its per game average of cresting the millenial mark for passing yardage on the season

Ronan will host the third-ranked Dillon Beavers for Senior Night Thursday. The game was moved up on account of a shortage of certified officials for the original Friday scheduling.
