At Polson this past Saturday, the visiting Browning Lady Indians proved to be more than a handful for the host Lady Pirates, but the Polson volleyballers were able to take charge a crucial junctures during the latter stages of each set to capture the match.

Each set featured multiple ties, but it was the third set that had the Lady Pirates scrambling to play catchup. Trailing 21-23, a Maggie Todd kill and back-to-back service aces by Lena Pawlowski vaulted the Lady Pirates into the lead 24-23.

The next point would deliver the match into Polson paws. Pawlowski, the quintessential LP of team LP, led the team from the service line with a quartet of aces, two separate sets of back-to-back smokers, while Todd spiked a baker’s dozen.

At Stevensville this past Thursday, the Lady Pirates swatted their hosts in the first set by a 4:1 ratio, but thereafter the Yellowjackets organized into a swarm. Trailing 10-16 in the second set, Polson rallied to tie at 16 apiece and looked like they might be able to jump out to a 2-0 set advantage. But Stevensville regrouped, extending the set into extras to knot that match at one apiece.

When the host Jackets took the third set for a 2-1 advantage and were leading 11-19 in the fourth set, the Lady Pirates were called upon to shift into another gear, rallied to tie, then knotted the match at two games apiece to force a fifth and final set to settle the match.

Residual effects from the Mission Valley Power outage may have had a detrimental effect upon their energy levels as the Yellowjackets would sting the Lady Pirates in the fifth to take the match 3-2.

Despite the loss, a new personal record was set that night. Perhaps Lady Pirate volleyballer Maggie Todd was inspired by Kiefer Sutherland’s fictional character Jack Bauer, who averts fictitious terrorist plots on the now syndicated Fox network TV series.

Or perhaps the night before, Todd and company watched the movie, “Cheaper by the Dozen.”

Whatever might have played an influential role, Mags went off during the match and would mint a new varsity career high when she spiked two dozen kills. Senior spikers Misty Tenas and Grace Quinones collaborated on another baker’s dozen, while Kobbey Smith chipped in seven kills and sizzled from the service line with a half dozen too hot to handle potatoes.

Earlier in the week at Whitefish, the Lady Pirates solidified their hold on the second seed in Northwestern A conference by leashing the Lady Bulldogs 3-1.

Summing up the trio of games over the course of last week, maximum mayhem Mags chocked up a whopping 53 total kills (16+24+13) for a high teen per game average while also resetting the bar with a new varsity career high.

Polson will attend the Missoula Invitational tournament this week, where they will face a number of AA schools along with other Western A teams.
