At Hamilton in the Western A Classic, the Mission Valley had seven area runners place among the top fifteen for all-conference honors.

Among area girls, the best finish was turned in by Analeta YellowBird of Ronan, who placed ninth by clocking among the low-21s. Polson had two runners place among the top fifteen in Halle Heninger and Karli Owens.

Among area boys, Ronan’s James Normandeau continued his stellar senior prep cross country season with a second place finish with a consistent sub-17. Medalist honors went to Colter Kirkland of Hamilton by a mere .16 hundredths of a second. Kirkland trailed most of the race, apparently shifting into another gear as he tracked his quarry down to barely edge him in a photo finish more typical of sprints during track season despite Normandeau’s seemingly insurmountable lead.

Fellow Chief runners Brant Heiner and Michael Irvine made the top ten with solid sub-18s. Polson’s Mason Sloan had the best time for the Pirates by placing fourth as the final member of a quartet to clock among the sub-17s.

Polson coach Matt Seeley “was proud of the high level of effort and toughness from all of the Pirate runners, some of them laying it all on the line to wrap up their 2019 seasons.” Ronan coach Noelle Winebrenner commented, “we’ve had our sights set on this upcoming weekend.” Elaborating on the capability of Normandeau, Winebrenner said, “He’s mentally tough ... [and] capable of just about anything he sets his mind to.”

At the Western B/C Divisional held in Thompson Falls the preceding Wednesday, the Mission St. Ignatius cross-country team captured a pair of firsts. Among the girls, Karolyna Buck led the pack to lay claim to Western B Divisional champion honors. Among the boys, Zoran LaFrombois and Isaiah Nasewytewa placed among the top ten for all-conference honors as they paced their team to a second place team finish, the first cross-country team placement in program history.

Among Western C girls, Guinevere Contreras of Charlo not only ran the top time, but the only time that was cited. Teammate Aryal Love was otherwise engaged elsewhere, taking a PSAT test, but has prequalified for the State meet.

The cross-country season finale takes place on Saturday, October 26, at the Eagle Falls Golf Course in Great Falls where the all-classification State meet wraps up the season.
