Cross-Country Roundup

by John Heglie Special to Lake County Leader
| September 19, 2019 11:39 AM

Most Mission Valley area cross-country runners competed at a pair of Northwest Montana venues this past week, while Polson sent a contingent out of state to Spokane.

At the Mission Invitational in St. Ignatius this last Tuesday, the Ronan boys and Polson girls took top team honors, while the Polson boys placed second. The Ronan Maiden girls and Mission Bulldog boys took third as a team.

In the boys race, Ronan’s James Normandeau held off a furious challenge by Polson’s Mason Sloan to take the top prize, a mere six tenths of a second separating the two sub-17s. In the girls race, Polson freshman Karli Owens turned in a strong second. Other top ten finishers among the boys include Ronan’s Brant Heiner, Zarec Couture along with Michael Irvine, Mission’s Isaiah Nasewytewa as well as Zoran LaFrombois, Two Eagle River’s Anthony Charlo and Polson’s Isaac Stene. Other top ten finishers among the girls include Karolyna Buck of Mission and Polson Lady Pirates Halle Heninger, Gwen Seeley along with River Shoemake.

This past weekend at Rebecca Farm, area runners got a chance to hoof it around the premier equestrian venue as they pushed the pace at the annual Kalispell Invitational. Ronan’s James Normandeau was the top Class A finisher, coming in a close second behind the AA Sentinel winner. Other top twenty finishers included Chief teammates Brant Heiner and Michael Irvine. The best times turned in by Mission Valley girls were by Ronan’s Olivia Heiner and the Charlo tandem of Aryal Love along with Guinevere Contreras.

This past weekend at Spokane, Polson sent a contingent of runners who competed in the Highlander Invitational, an event which draws some of the best in the Northwest. Mason Sloan was the lone top ten finisher in the boys junior race, while Karli Owens came in one entry back of making the top ten in the girls combined race with an eleventh place finish. Polson as a team placed sixth. Owens time would have translated into a fifth place finish among freshmen. Elisabeth Bjorge turned in the most improved time, shaving a minute off her previous best thus far this season and almost two minutes better than the time she posted last season at the 2018 Highlander.

Most area runners will be competing in Thompson Falls this Thursday.
