Mission Valley gridders earn Western 8-man honors

Fifteen Mission Valley football players were acknowledged for their exploits on the gridiron this past season.

The Mission Bulldogs of St. Ignatius garnered seven picks.

Senior Layne Spidel was named to the all-state team with dual first-team honors at both running back and defensive end. Spidel rushed for over 500 yards this past season and culminates his prep career with over 1,000 yards rushing with 21 career touchdowns, 17 on the ground. This was the second dual acknowledgement for Spidel, a first-team nom last season for kick returns and defensive end.

Sophomore Bryce Umphrey received bonus all-state recognition on account of Western teams advancing through playoff rounds, a first-team nom at wide receiver and second-team defensive back as well as punt returner. Umphrey exceeded 500 yards combined on the ground as well as pass receptions.

Sophomore Canyon Sargent received second-team dual acknowledgement at wide receiver as well as linebacker. Sargent gained over 500 all-purpose yards with nine touchdown receptions.

Junior Charley Adams earned dual second-team honors at slotback and kick returner. Adams scored thrice on the ground and twice returned kickoffs this past season. This was the second dual acknowledgement for Adams, a second-team pick at slotback and defensive back last season.

Second-team senior Lalo Bravo was acknowledged for anchoring the offensive line at center.

Senior Ian Killorn was a second-team defensive pick at linebacker.

Second-team sophomore quarterback Kellen McClure threw for over 1,800 yards this past season and 25 touchdowns.

The Charlo Vikings received a half dozen postseason second-team nominations.

Second-team senior wide receiver Phil Marquez caught a pair of touchdown passes, added a pick-6 to his three interceptions, and was third in tackles on the team with more than 50 tackles.

Second-team junior defensive back Coyle Nagy picked the pocket of passers for a team-leading five interceptions, added a fumble recovery and was the team’s second leading tackler. As Viking signal-caller behind center, Nagy accounted for more than 1,000 total yards rushing and passing with 18 touchdowns, 10 passing and eight rushing.

Second-team senior running back Roper Edwards led the team in scoring with 10 touchdowns, eight gained on the ground and two reeled in from the air.

Sophomore slotback Tucker Love was also named to the second team. Love scored eight touchdowns on offense to go with a pick-6 and a punt return for a score.

Second-team senior linebacker Nate Clark was the team's leading tackler with 76, including a sack and two fumble recoveries.

Second-team sophomore defensive end Dawson DuMont led the Vikings in sacks and tackles for loss, and had more than 100 all-purpose yards.

The Arlee Warriors placed a pair on the postseason honors list.

Senior Colt Crawford received bonus all-state recognition on account of Western teams advancing through playoff rounds, along with dual recognition as first-team running back and second-team linebacker. Crawford led Arlee in scoring with a dozen rushing touchdowns this past season. This was the third all-conference nom for Crawford, a second-team pick last season at running back and dual honorable mention his sophomore season at slotback along with linebacker.

Senior Noah Coulson received a first-team nom for punter. Coulson was the gridiron equivalent of the Swiss army knife this past season. He did a little bit of everything for the Warriors. Listed on the roster as a lineman, Coulson threw for two touchdowns filling in at quarterback, rushed for a score from the backfield, caught a touchdown reception and turned in a pick-6.
