Lady Vikings score two easy wins to stay perfect
The Charlo Lady Vikings remained undefeated Friday night on their home court as the hosts beat Two Eagle River, 80-10.
The Lady Vikings (16-0) had four players score in double digits and a total of five others find the scoring column.
Senior Destiny Manuel and junior Carlee Fryberger led the way with 14 points each. Junior Liev Smith scored 12 and junior Connor Fryberger had 11 points.
Freshman Mila Hawk just missed double digits with nine points. She was nearly perfect at the free throw line, hitting 5 of 6.
The Lady Vikings hit 12 of 21 from the charity stripe.
They also hit two 3-pointers, one each by Smith and Kassidi Cox. Cox, Brooke Alder and Hayleigh Smith each scored six points.
Lady Vikings veteran head coach Bret Thompson is pleased with how his team has improved during the season and how they are playing defense.
“Really happy with our defense,” he said. “We need to stay healthy, though. That’s the biggest thing.”
Thompson said despite losing three good senior starters from last year’s state-qualifying team that finished 23-3, the team has seemingly not missed a beat as the younger players have quickly grasped what they need to do to be successful.
“The younger kids are starting to get it,” Thompson said. “We have a good group of experienced players and the newcomers are seeing what they need to do.”
Charlo led 17-0 after one quarter and 38-0 before the Lady Eagles got on the scoreboard when TER senior Larissa Powell hit a free throw.
Charlo’s pressure defense offered it several easy attempts at baskets and the Lady Vikes converted several. Their efforts on defense held the Lady Eagles scoreless in the first and fourth quarters.
Two Eagle did tally nine points in the third quarter. Junior Ce’Alana Shepherd hit one 3-pointer and finished with five points to lead her squad. Sophomore Viviana After-Buffalo Adams scored four points.
The Lady Vikings celebrated Senior Night Saturday by recognizing Manuel. They then beat Darby, 57-20. Carlee Fryberger led with 18 points and Smith scored 13. Manuel added eight.
They will wrap up the regular season with a big game at Hot Springs this Saturday.
In the first meeting this season, Jan. 17, in Charlo, the Lady Vikings won a nail-biter, 43-40.
