Mission-Charlo’s Allik earns state wrestling title

Mission/Charlo wrestler Isaiah Allik will play football collegiately and he’s been an all-state performer in track and field as well as in wrestling, but Saturday at MetraPark in Billings achieved his crowning glory after winning the Class B/C 170-pound state championship.

Allik, who originally hailed from Alaska, was close to a state title in 2018 when his 4x100 relay team was third at the state track and field championships.

A year ago, Allik placed fourth at the wrestling championships in Billings.

Allik capped an undefeated season at 42-0. It was his second 40-win season. Allik was 41-5 in 2018.

Allik’s title bid was nearly derailed in his state opener. Gaten Wassberg, of Whitehall, had half as many wins as Allik (21) but he pushed the Bulldogs senior to the end before Allik scored a 4-3 win.

In the quarterfinals match, Allik knocked off Glasgow’s Ty Kittleson when he had to default because of an injury.

In the semifinals, Allik made short work of Huntley Project’s William Loveridge with a pin in 1:25.

In the finals, Allik took on Shepherd’s Nate Gorham and earned the title with a thrilling 5-4 win.

Gorham was a state runnerup at 182 pounds in 2019. He and Loveridge were both 40-win wrestlers this year.

Allik was a state medal winner a year ago in track and field when his 4x100 relay team was eighth.

Before coming to Montana, Allik was third at the Alaska State Wrestling Tournament as a freshman. He narrowly missed winning a medal in 2018 in Montana, his sophomore season.

Allik, who played defensive back for Charlo last fall, is part of the Montana Tech Orediggers 2020 recruiting class.

Led by Allik’s championship, the Bulldogs were tied with Broadwater for sixth with 84 points. Glasgow won the B/C team title with 154 points.

Mission-Charlo had three other state placewinners. Darwin Adams was third at 152 pounds, Troy Matt was fifth at 182 pounds and Walker Murphy was sixth at 126 points.
