Mission Valley wrestlers perform well at Duals

At Ronan this past weekend, a trio of area wrestling teams grappled against some of the best competition west of the Continental Divide.

Opening day action split teams in attendance into pools. The BC Mission-Charlo Bulldogs and the NWA Polson Pirates ended up assigned to the same pool, which eventually precipitated a cross classification clash in which the Bulldogs narrowly edged the upperclass Pirates.

Host Ronan (2-1-1), Mission-Charlo (3-1) and Polson (3-1) all fared well as each advanced to the championship bracket out of their respective pools.

In bracket competition, Mission-Charlo won their opening round, while Ronan and Polson got rerouted into consolation by losses to the teams that would eventually wrestle for the championship.

The Bulldogs joined the Chiefs and Pirates in consolation action after eventual tournament champion Townsend squeezed past Mission-Charlo on the strength of forfeits. Both Polson and Ronan advanced another round with wins, the Pirates drawing a rematch with Mission-Charlo, while Ronan would be outclawed by the Columbia Falls mat Cats.

In the Rez wrangle rematch between the Bulldogs and Pirates, this time Polson gained the upper hand, advancing to play for the consolation title against the Wildcats. Columbia Falls took third, while Polson placed fourth.

BC top 10 ranked teams Townsend and Mission-Charlo both got a chance to size one another up in precursors of potential future state matchups, with Townsend edging the Bulldogs on account of empty weight classes despite holding a 6-4 edge in actual wrestling bouts won.

Several Mission Valley wrestlers fared quite well. For Mission-Charlo, Isaiah Allik and Miles Anderson finished with unblemished records, as did Braedon Iliff of the Pirates.

Arlee was idle the first weekend of the new year, but the Warriors will join Mission-Charlo at the Cutbank Invitational this coming weekend. Both Polson and Ronan will be competing in duals this week that include a double dual date in Libby this upcoming weekend.
