Pirates prevail on Perez pair pass plucks

by John Heglie, special for the Leader
| September 16, 2020 12:15 AM

At Browning, the visiting Pirates of Polson and the host Indians were locked in a tight gridiron grapple in the first half. After the Pirates got on the board in the first quarter with a short yardage Robert Perez reception, the Indians countered with a run early in the second period to knot the contest at a half dozen apiece.

Polson had another promising red zone penetration early in the first half, but were unable to convert on fourth down deep in Browning territory, after which the Indians took over on downs.

Just before the end of the first half, Polson was able to create some separation with a tally to take a 12-6 lead at the break when Jony Perez reeled in a three yarder from Jarrett Wilson.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Pirates went up by two scores for an 18-6 lead on another redzone completion to Jony Perez.

Browning would round out the scoring on a pass play of their own, but would be unable to close the gap further when the Pirate defense denied further incursions.

Pirate head grid coach Kaden Glinsmann was upbeat about the tough road win when he commented, "I love the way our young been battled. They fought through a ton of adversity and we became a closer team because of it."

Polson is slated to host the Ronan Chiefs in another rendition of their annual Rez rivalry wrangle rendezvous this Friday, air quality permitting.

Chiefs challenge, but Loggers repel Ronan for win

by John Heglie, special for the Leader

At Ronan, the host Chiefs put up a valiant battle on the gridiron against the visiting Loggers of Libby.

Despite being outsized, the Chiefs were very much in this game

Midway through the first frame, the Chiefs penetrated deep into Libby territory bordering the redzone. But Logger defense denied further incusions into their real estate, forcing a fourth and long that resulted in the pass being picked off in the end zone.

After a Libby short gain, all-state Logger running back Dawson Young scampered three quarters of the length of the field to put the visitors on the scoreboard 6-0.

Ronan would penetrate midway into Logger territory on their subsequent possession, but the drive stalled at the 32 yard line, where Libby would take over on downs. As the Loggers sought to tack another tally onto the scoreboard, Daniel Kelsch would pick the pass at the 21 yard line and return it to the 39. The winds of momentum looked like it might shift in Ronan's favor. But instead of capitalizing upon their good fortune, they would instead find themselves sucked in the vortex of a Murphy's Law tornado as an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty backed them up 15 yards, followed by a pair of hiking misques that sent the ball careening out of the back end of the endzone for a safety. Instead of harnassing a potential momentum shift, they would find themselves singed by a backfire. Libby would score on the possession, kick the extra point and go up 15-0.

Another Libby tally and Ronan found themselves trailing by three trips into the endzone.

Rather than fold up the tent, the Chiefs continued to go to work and pound away. On their ensuing possession, they continued to make the kind of plays necessary to sustain their drive. Kelsch would throw the ball deep to Daniel Bishop running a long route, just barely missing connecting with him just shy of the frontide corner of the endzone. A quarterback keeper would advance the ball to the 21, where Bruin Largent would drag Logger tacklers along for a piggyback ride that would yield Ronan's first tally of the game, 22-6. Libby would be intercepted in the endzone by Trapper McAllister to cap the final play of the first half.

After receiving the second half kickoff, Libby was again on the march down the field. On a fourth and five, Ronan defense would hold to deny the necessary yardage, the Chiefs taking over on downs. Ronan would end up punting the ball away, but got it back when Kelsch made his second interception of the game. A passing interference call when Chief wide receiver Jayden Rodda was fouled would advance the ball, though not as far as it would have been had he been allowed to catch it. A Trapper McAllister long reception would take the Chiefs deep into redzone territory. From their, Largent would draw short yardage work to pull within a tally 22-14 after the successful conversion.

Libby would counter for an insurance buffer score. On the ensuring change of possession, Ronan was on the march once again, but the drive would stall midway into Libby territory, where the Loggers would take over on downs. A Caleb Cheff interception would return possession back to Ronan, but that drive would stall on account of a logjam of Loggers. On the ensuring Libby possession, they would run out the clock.

This time around, the outcome was a much closer contest than the 55-6 shellacking last season. There were opportunities that had Ronan been able to capitalize, might have changed the complexion of the game enough perhaps even alter its outcome. This time around, they scored twice as many points while cutting the opposition tally in half along with some opportunities to carve further into the deficit.

The Chiefs travel to Polson for the annual Rez rivalry wrangle rendezvous, air quality permitting.
