Volleyball roundup: Lady Pirates split conference slate

At Polson last Tuesday, the host Lady Pirates periodically held visiting Whitefish at bay, but the leash wouldn't hold the Lady Bulldogs as they tugged free to nip their hosts.

Trajectory malfunctions would factor large in the pendulum swing between set winners. Polson had a half dozen errant kill attempts coupled with a trio of service errors during their second set loss that floundered into the net like caught fish, more than enough to account for the disparity on the scoreboard.

During the third set, the Lady Pirate opened with the first two points, but then watched the Lady Bulldogs string together bunches, prompting Polson coach Lizzy Cox to spend a timeout trailing 4-9 in an effort to right the listing ship. Refocused, the Lady Pirates carved into the deficit by taking the next two points on the strength of all-stater Maggie Todd morphing into maximum mayhem mode for back-to-back kills. But Whitefish responded by stringing together the next five, leaving Polson trailing in their wake 6-14. Chipping away, the Lady Pirates would pull within 21-22 with a Liz Tolley kill. But Whitefish would wriggle off the hook of the momentum shift to take the set for a 2-1 advantage.

The fourth set was almost the mirror opposite of the previous set, with the Lady Pirates vaulting out to a 9-2 advantage in the early going, handily evening the sets at two apiece to force a fifth and final set finale.

The fifth set finale saw a trio of early ties. But after five-all, Whitefish would edge ahead. After a string of three successive points, Polson was forced to call a timeout trailing 8-12. But a Bulldog service error and a Liz Tolley kill would be all the further that the Lady Pirates would be able to carve into the deficit, dropping the finale.

Last Friday, the Lady Pirates swept the visiting Lady Indians of Browning. The first two sets were competitive as the visitors pushed into the 20s. But the Polson front line of all-stater Maggie Todd along with the collaborative effort of Kobbey Smith and Liz Tolley inflicted the visitors with their aerial bombardment, while Berkley Ellis and Hallie Moss sizzled from the service line by serving up a quartet of aces each.

Polson will have already hosted Hamilton on Tuesday, then tangle with the WildKats in Columbia Falls on Thursday, before returning home to host a Rez rivalry wrangle with Ronan on Saturday, September 19.

Maidens sleep well after B&B wins, capsized by Kats

The Ronan Maidens emerged from a marathon week of volleyball with a pair of sweeps over visiting 7B Mission and NWA Browning, but were capsized by the Kats of Columbia Falls on the road. That midweel contest featured a NWA conference version of the Clash of the Titans between six-footer middles Madeline McCrea of Ronan and Madysen Hoerner of Columbia Falls. Ronan held the edge in snuff blocks at the net, but the WildKats prevailed in the otehr stat categories. The third set would be a close one with both teams tallying among the 20s before Columbia Falls closed it out.

The Maidens embark upon a pair of key road matches at Whitefish on Thursday, then a cross-county clash at Polson on Saturday.

Lady Bulldog volleyballers split conference slate

The Mission Lady Bulldogs volleyballers might have easily been mistaken as racetrack Greyhounds as they culminated a marathon week on their scheduling. First on their docket was a cross-classification clash at Class A Ronan. After the initial shock of playing up against the tall lineup of the Maidens, the Lady Bulldogs settled down as each successive set tallied higher than the previous.

This past Thursday, Mission opened theirn 7B conference schedule against the visiting Lady Lions of Lincoln County. Eureka would prevail, but both bookend sets gravitated into the teens.

Over the weekend, Mission traveled to Troy, where they picked up their first conference win over the Lady Trojans as Kooper Page and Izzy Evans combined for kills among the 20s. Ella Arlint was a defensivie diggin dynamo with two dozen digs, while Maysa Couture set the table for the front line at the net.

Mission volleyball returns to action with a wee homestand as the Lady Bulldogs host the 7B Bigfork Vals in a conference caper on Thursday, then hope to lock down the Lady Wardens of 6B Deer Lodge when they visit on Saturday.

Lady Vikings perpetuate undefeated streak

Charlo Lady Viking volleyball continued their version of Nordic navigation as they neutralized a pair of 14C conference challengers this past week. At Plains, Charlo reined in the host Trotters in straight sets by rocking the service line with sizzlers while blistering the net with spikes. Kassidi Cox led the team in two categories as she generated a dozen and a half points for kills as well as aces combined.

This past weekend at Charlo, the Lady Vikings held an early Senior Night honoring that also showcased the contributions of siblings Carlee and Connor Fryberger. The pair collaborated on twenty defensive digs.

The undefeated Lady Vikings are slated to travel to Drummond to face the Lady Trojans on Thursday, September 17, then host the Plains Trotters on Tuesday, September 22.
