Happy Homecoming: Bulldogs ground Hawks

Homecomings always tend to be more enjoyable when one can savor the sweet taste of victory rather than sup upon the sour scent of defeat.

At St. Ignatius, the host Bulldogs were finally able to shed the monkey on their back and get over the hump as they doubled up on the visiting Blackhawks of Seeley-Swan. Mission had lost its two previous games coming into the night by six points despite generating plenty of offense — scoring 100 points in the two losses combined.

This time around the offense went to work early. Mission initially deployed the ground army of Layne Spidel, Bryce Umphrey and Charley Adams, pounding the ground for two tallies plus conversions. Then they called in air support from Kellen McClure, who hooked up with receivers John Komotios and Canyon Sargent three times each.

It was quite a night for Spidel, who also served as this year's homecoming king, along with queen Sydney Brander.

By the end of the first quarter, Mission had generated enough points to emerge victorious. But at that juncture, nobody knows what might transpire between then and the end.

Mission plunged five more times into the pool of pay dirt, crafting counters to each Blackhawk foray into their half of the real estate.

Mission travels to Darby to tangle with the Tigers on Friday.
