Volleyball Roundup: Pirates topple Loggers in key sweep
At Libby, the visiting Lady Pirates were knotted at one set apiece when the host Lady Loggers prevailed after extending the second set into extras. Thereafter, Polson took care of business by taking the next two sets and the match. The Lady Pirates held a slight edge in the offensive categories of kills and aces as well as defensive digs, but Libby snuffed more blocks at the net. All-stater Maggie Todd and Kobbey Smith collaborated on 50 digs on defense, while clobberin Kobb and maximum mayhem Mags combined for 30 kills on offense
Polson was scheduled to play Butte Central this past week, but the match was canceled on account of CoV2 contact tracing quarantine sequestering of players.
Rez rivalry rendezvous wrangle round two
The Pirates travel to Ronan on Friday for the rematch round of their Rez rivalry wrangle at the Ronan Events Center. The Maidens won the first set, then pushed the Lady Pirates in the others before Polson pulled out the match by taking the final three sets. Ronan held a slight edge in kills and blocks, but Polson outdug their opponent by better than a 2:1 ratio.
After their rivalry wrangle with Ronan, the Lady Pirates travel to Whitefish for a rematch with the Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday.

Kats spoil Maiden Homecoming
At Ronan, the visiting undefeated WildKats of Columbia Falls were in postseason form against the host Maidens during their Homecoming matchup. A trio of jump servers and a 6-footer who slings rockets would create numerous difficulties for Maidens on the other side of the net.
The Kats jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first set before Ronan got on the board. Trajectory malfunctions by C-Falls accounted for half of Ronan's tally with the exception of a LaReina Cordova kill toward the end as the Kats took the first set handily.
The Maidens were very much in the second set during the early going as the two teams tied a half dozen times, the latest at seven apiece before the Kats edged ahead with a 4-0 run that precipitated a Ronan timeout. An Olivia Clairmont kill followed by an ace, a Madeline McCrea spike supplemented by a tandem block by McCrea along with Leina Ulutoa would move the Maidens into teen territory. But it was too much feline ferocity on the other side of the net as the visitors took at two set advantage.
The third set found the Maidens leading early on at 4-2. But the visitors tied it up at five apiece before stringing together a 6-1 run capped by a Kat senior setter Hannah Schweikert service ace.
Schweikert would sandwich the timeout with a back-to-back pair of service aces as the visitors looked like they were going to pin their hosts on the ropes. But the Maidens responded with a run of their own that included a Clairmont kill and McCrea block interspersed with visitor faux pas as Ronan closed the gap to within one, 16-17, before a Kat 3-0 run forced another timeout to refocus. The Maidens played the Kats even thereafter, but the Columbia Falls had the advantage of the lead as the third set precipitated into their claws for a sweep.

Mission falls to Hawks, tops Scarlets
Last Thursday at Thompson Falls, the visiting Lady Bulldogs were tripped up by the talons of a talented Lady Bluehawks squad, whose pair of all-state hitters collaborated to offset Mission's entire output both at the net with spikes and at the service line with aces. Recently crowned Homecoming queen Sydney Brander let Mission with a half dozen kills as well as digs.
At St. Ignatius in a cross-county clash, the visiting Scarlets and host Lady Bulldogs battled it out at the net. The opening set extended into extras before Mission was able to gain the edge. The Scarlets would take the third set and had they been able to hold in the opener, would have forced a fifth set finale like the last time they faced each other.
Mission hosts a wee homestand this week as they face the Breakers of Loyola Sacred Heart on Thursday, then the Lady Trojans of Troy on Saturday.

Scarlets in red against two Blues, tame Trotters
Scarlet volleyballers from Arlee faced a pair of teams with blue school color affiliations that kept them in the red last week. Against the Lady Bluehawks of Thompson Falls, the Scarlets were victimized not only by a talented team, but also by a phonetic namesake as Scarlette Schwindt spiked more kills by her lonesome than the sum tally on the other side of the net. But the Arlee Scarlets held a slight edge at the service line and with defensive digs.
Against the visiting Trotters of Plains, the Scarlets picked up their first win as Jerny Crawford and Halle Adams combined for 15 kills, while Shonlea Matt and Noel Johnson collaborated on 13 service aces.
This past Saturday, the Mission Lady Bulldogs, which are also affiliated with blue school colors, likewise kept their cross-county cousin Scarlets in the red. But not before Arlee forced the opening set into extras while also taking the third set before Mission won the match.
The Scarlets are slated to host the visiting Lady Falcons of Florence this Thursday, then travel to Deer Lodge on Saturday.

Vikings remain undefeated
This past week, Charlo perpetuated their win streak as they held the reins tight on the Trotters from Plains, then mined another victory from the Lady Prospectors of Philipsburg. MollyKate Sullivan and Carlee Fryberger were the lead spikers for the Lady Vikings, combining for a cumulative teen tally each over the course of both matches. Carlee Fryberger rocked the service line with a cumulative tally of 13 aces over the course of the two games.
The Lady Vikings travel to Hot Springs on Thursday for their second segment against the Lady Savage Heat, then swing over to Philipsburg for a rematch with the Lady Prospectors.
