Interrupted journey
April 1, 1993 Lake County Leader
For Big Arm resident Erica Binger, a weekend break from shipboard classes turned into an eight-hour jetliner hijacking.
A liberal arts major at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., Erica is studying this semester aboard the SS Universe, a floating campus of the University of Pittsburgh. The ship had docked at Madras, India, and Erica and three friends were flying back after seeing the Taj Mahal in Agra.
Their trip was interrupted when the Airbus A300 was commandeered by a Hindu man who claimed he had explosives strapped to his body. …
Eight hours later, Singh surrendered the plane to commandos in the northwestern city of Amritsar. …
“As far away as (Erica) is, it’s hard to get all the facts,” said Erica’s father, James “Mac” Binger, but he added she “sounded good” in a phone conversation with her mother, Pat.
Showboat coming
March 31, 1966 Flathead Courier
It’s official — the Showboat’s coming to Polson.
Lake County Productions, Inc. directors held their annual reorganization meeting at the Salish Hotel and approved a resolution agreeing to sponsor a Flathead Lake Showboat production under the direction of Elmer Robinson.
The event will be held at Sacajawea Park. As is custom, the Showboat will feature mainly local, volunteer entertainers and will be held aboard the SS Hodge. This will be the third year in a row for the Showboat performance. It was renewed in 1964 as part of the community’s celebration of the Montana Territorial Centennial.
