Fryberger, Brander shine at Gene Hughes Invitational

Charlo senior Carlee Fryberger won three events and took third in another during the Gene Hughes Invitational track meet at Hamilton on April 1.

Fryberger swept the 100 and 300 hurdles and won the 200. She finished third in the 100, behind Cora Pesanti of Anaconda and Claire Hutchinson of Stevensville.

Sydney Brander of Mission also had a big day. She finished fourth, just behind Fryberger, in the girls 100. She also won the triple jump and finished second in the long jump, to go with a fourth-place finish in the 400.

Teams from Arlee, Polson and Ronan also competed.

All-state distance runner Brant Heiner of Ronan won the boys 3,200 by 25 seconds with a time of 10:11.14. He was followed by Mission’s Andrew Rush (10:36.34). Fellow Chief Michael Irvine notched second-place finishes in both the 800 and the 1,600.

Polson’s Jarrett Wilson won the boys 300 hurdles, followed by Colter Cornwell of Ronan and Colt Crawford of Arlee. Wilson also finished fourth in the 100.

Ronan’s Dylan Kelch had a throw of 150-06 in the javelin to win the event, followed by Polson’s Jonathan Perez (142-08).

Payton Cates of Ronan took first place and was the only athlete to top 6 feet (6-02) in the boys high jump.
