Calvin Judson (Jud) Hubbard of Murfreesboro, Tenn., passed away on Friday, April 9, 2021.

Jud was born Dec. 30, 1944 in Cut Bank to Calvin Porter Hubbard and Lois Arlene (Judson) Hubbard. He graduated from Polson High School in 1963 and joined the U.S. Navy. During his years of service, he did tours of duty in the Mediterranean, Santa Domingo and Vietnam. He married his high school sweetheart, Christine Lynne Muller, in 1967.

Jud was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Christine, their son Brian (Michelle), daughter Erin and four grandchildren: Isabella, William, Sophia and Calista. He is also survived by his three younger brothers, Duncan (Kathleen), Kirk (Anne) and Tim.

After getting out of the service he worked in a variety of industries. His two favorite jobs were serving as the editor of the Ronan Pioneer and Flathead Courier (now known as the Lake County Leader) in the 1980s and serving as director of operations for Churches of Christ Disaster Relief in the early 1990s until he retired in 2012.

He loved being the editor of both the Ronan Pioneer and the Flathead Courier, whether it was covering a school event, a bighorn sheep round-up, or a life-altering situation, he always felt like reporting was his passion and strived to get the facts right. He got his true start in journalism thanks to the kindness and mentorship of Paul Fugleberg, who mentored him back in high school and kept in touch over the years.

Later in life, he wanted to give back and got involved in streamlining supplies for those affected by a disaster. He was responsible for ordering semi truckloads of medicine, cleaning supplies, food and other items needed in a crisis. In the past couple of years, even while suffering from dementia, he would dream of ordering supplies and negotiating rates – all while asleep.

Jud was an avid fisherman for many years and enjoyed every type of fishing. He wasn’t the best fisherman, but he always had a good story to share.

A memorial service will be held later in Montana.

The family would like to thank Willowbrook Hospice of Franklin, Tenn., with special thanks to Nurse Megan and Community Care of Rutherford County in Murfreesboro for making his final days comfortable. In lieu of memorials, please do something kind for someone else – buy a meal, adopt a pet and bring a smile to someone’s face.
