Sun and fun at the Dilly Bar Invitational

RONAN — Saturday was a beautiful day in the Mission Valley for track and field and ice cream.

Six area teams from multiple classifications competed in the annual Dilly Bar Invitational track meet at Ronan High School under clear skies on what felt like a summer day.

This year’s meet involved a new twist, courtesy of Ronan head coach Brian Labbe, who suggested unofficial, temporary alliances in the athletes’ quest for the day’s final prize — ice cream Dilly Bars for the winning teams.

Coaches settled on Polson/Charlo vs. Bigfork/Mission vs. Ronan/Clark Fork.

In the end, Bigfork boys and girls won the team standings handily, and Bigfork/Mission enjoyed the victors’ Dilly Bars.

The meet featured a few additional events that won’t show up on the official stat sheets. Two 4x100 relays were added, but teams could only be made up of athletes who competed in throwing events.

“The Ronan and Clark Fork boys won the first-ever Throwers 4x100 COVID Relay with a time of 1:02.5, and the Bigfork and Mission Girls won … with a time of 1:04.5,” Labbe said after the meet.

“And to our knowledge, these are both world record-setting times,” he joked.

The winning relay teams also received Dilly Bars.

The Polson boys and girls teams each finished second behind Bigfork, with the Ronan teams both finishing third.

Carlee Fryberger of Charlo had another great meet. She won the 100, 200, 400, then added a win in the triple jump for good measure.

Charlo also got a first-place finish from Aida Cote in the discus, with a personal-record throw of 102 feet, 8 inches.

Polson’s Lucas Targerson was the boys speedster of the day. He won the 100 meters with a sprint of 11.6 seconds. He also finished sixth in the 200, second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.

Polson also got wins from Jarrett Wilson in the 300 hurdles and Jonathan Perez in the Javelin, and from Ashtyn Wagner in the 800 and 3,200. Teammate Adison Carlson was right behind Wagner for second in the 3,200, followed by Ronan duo Halle Heninger and Olivia Heiner, who won the 1,600.

Ronan’s Payton Cates won the discus by nearly 21 feet. He also finished second in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 2 inches and took ninth in the shot put.

Brant Heiner won the 3,200 with a time of 10:07, followed by teammate Ronan Michael Irvine in second place.

Ronan also got a win in the girls high jump from Lindsey Brooks, who cleared four feet, 10 inches.

Ronan sophomore Leina Ulutoa finished second in the triple jump behind Fryberger and ahead of third-place finisher Sydney Brander of Mission. Brander won the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 6.75 inches.

The Bulldogs’ Layne Spidel won the boys 400 and finished second in the 200. Mission’s Andrew Rush won the 800 and 1,600 with personal-best times in both events.
