Smooth sailing for Lady Pirates

by SCOT HEISEL
Lake County Leader | April 29, 2021 12:35 AM

Polson softball feasted on a trio of opponents last week, including Lake County rival Ronan.

The Lady Pirates (7-0) went 3-0 and outscored their opponents 54-4. Thirty-four of those runs came against the clearly overmatched Lady Indians (0-8) of Browning at the Polson Softball Complex on Saturday.

Katelyne Druyvestein got the start and struck out five over two hitless innings to improve to 7-0 on the mound. Turquoise Pierre took over from there and completed the five-inning no-hitter, striking out six over three innings to earn the save.

Kobbey Smith and Lexy Orien each had a double and a home run for Polson. The duo drove in 15 of the team’s 34 runs. Orien smacked a two-run homer in the second inning, while Smith hit a grand slam in the third.

The Lady Pirates were set to host perennial SWA contender Frenchtown on Tuesday after the Leader went to press. They’ll play four games at the two-day Frenchtown Invitational over the weekend, including an interesting matchup with Mission-Arlee-Charlo on Saturday.

Polson 10, Columbia Falls 2

The Lady Pirates scored first, but trailed by a run after one inning after WildKat Alyssa Blankenship homered with one aboard Friday at Columbia Falls (5-7). The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fourth, when Anna Vert laced a line-drive triple to right-center that plated Mossy Kauley for a game tying RBI. Josie Caye plated Vert on an RBI groundout, and consecutive ground-rule doubles by Katelyn Druyvestein and Kobbey Smith put Polson up for good at 4-2.

Druyvestein struck out six and allowed five hits for the complete game.

Polson 15, Ronan 2

Josie Caye and Lexy Orien opened the game with a pair of doubles, and Polson scored 11 runs in the final two frames to end it after five on April 21 at Ronan.

After trailing 2-0, the host Maidens countered when their leadoff Kaleigh Benson drew a walk, then LouRasia Weatherwax bunted safely to place two runners on board. But the Polson defense turned a double play to snuff the threat.

The Maidens cut the lead in half in the second inning when Kiara Sherman hit a solo home run, her fourth extra base hit over the course of the past three games.

Haylie Webster smacked a solo home run for Ronan (2-6) in the third, her first varsity homer.

Orien hit a pair of homers and drew a walk to go 3 for 3 from the plate. She drove in five of Polson’s runs.

Katelyne Druyvestein earned her fifth win, striking out six in the process.

Ronan starter Macao Jackson struck out seven in the loss.

Two subsequent games last week for Ronan were rained out — Thursday’s home game against Hamilton and Saturday’s home game against Libby. They’ll make up the Hamilton game this weekend at the Frenchtown Invitational and will face Libby in a makeup game May 4 at Ronan.
