Sports briefs: Free throw contest coming to Linderman

Mission Valley Elks Lodge 1695 is hosting a hoop shoot/free throw contest Saturday, Dec. 18 and the Linderman Elementary School gymnasium.

Registration and warm-ups begin at 11:30 a.m., and the contest begins at noon.

Boys and girls age 8 to 13 (as of April 1, 2022) are invited to participate. There will be three competition categories for boys and girls: age 8-9, age 10-11 and age 12-13.

Participation is free, and winners of each age group advance to a district contest Jan. 15. Free chili and hot dogs will be available for contestants and their families.

Annual Polson fastpitch meeting is Dec. 21

Polson Girls Fastpitch Softball League will hold its annual meeting and board member elections at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21 at the Polson Boys and Girls Club, 110 17th Ave. W.

The meeting will include a recap of the 2021 season and an update on the future of the PGFS program and the upcoming 2022 season for the Spring League and USA programs.

Positions up for election include vice president (also field manager), USA/Splash, secretary and concessions co-manager. Full descriptions of the elected positions duties and responsibilities can be obtained by request at the following email: polsonfastpitchsoftball@gmail.com.

UM softball offering winter mini-clinics

The University of Montana softball program is hosting winter mini-clinics for high school-age players interested in hitting, pitching, defense and/or throwing.

The two-hour hitting session will cover the basic fundamentals of the swing, drills to help with proper swing path and the mental approach to your plate appearance. Each pitching session will be 90 minutes to help increase velocity, accuracy and proper spin on pitches.

The defense and throwing sessions will last one hour with fundamentals and various drills to help improve the camper’s individual skill level in that specific area. Camp sessions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Each camp participant will receive one-on-one time with Griz staff and members of the 2022 Griz softball team.

The cost of sessions ranges from $35 to $60.

Boys basketball registration underway

Registration for the Boys and Girls Club 2022 boys basketball season for boys in grades 3 to 6 is open.

Players can sign up for a reduced fee of $25 through Dec. 25, after which the fee is $30.

Cutthroat volleyball tryouts set for January

Tryouts for the Mission Valley Cutthroat Volleyball Club will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Jan. 17-25 at the Polson Boys and Girls Club, 110 17th Ave. W.

Tryout Dates:

  • U12/U13 teams: Jan. 17-18
  • U14 teams: Jan. 19-20
  • U16/U18 teams: Jan. 24-25

Athletes are asked to bring a water bottle, knee pads (if you have them) and athletic shoes.

Practices will be held twice a week, with teams practicing either at the Polson Boys and Girls Club, the Ronan Boys and Girls Club or Polson High School.
