Mission Valley Christian Academy officials are moving ahead with plans to expand their facilities, with the intent to offer increased opportunities both for the school and for the community at large.

Thanks to recent property and financial donations, the school has acquired 5 acres of adjoining property. Construction of a baseball diamond and sand volleyball court are underway. Plans call for the addition of high school classrooms, playground space, parking space and a preschool.

Additionally, the school plans to build a large gymnasium that will double as a community center to handle events with up to 500 people. Academy leaders are in discussions with Lake County to determine whether the building could be expanded in the future to meet FEMA requirements to serve as a community emergency shelter.

“We want to make this something that can serve the whole community, not just the school,” MVCA Principal Andrew Russell said. “The community has done so much to help us, and we want to support them back.”

Volunteers are already stepping up to help bring this long-held dream of expansion to fruition with donations of time, equipment and expertise.

“A lot of people have been waiting to see it happen for a long time, so they are excited to get it going,” Russell said.

The school is pursuing grants and fundraising opportunities for the construction project. They plan a fundraising auction and dinner in June, and welcome auction sponsors and tax-deductible donations. Visit mvcapolson.org or call 883-6858 for more information.
