Basketball Roundup: Charlo girls off to solid start
After a trio of dominant wins last week, the Charlo girls basketball team is off to another hot start. The Lady Vikings outscored their opponents 164-60 in the three wins and improved to 4-0 on the season.
Hayleigh Smith scored 15 points in a 60-15 home win over Arlee on Saturday. Katelyn Young added 11 points, Carlee Fryberger scored nine and Mila Hawk had eight to lead Charlo.
Sophomore Raven Parson led the Scarlets with five points, all in the first quarter. Titanya Lapahie scored four and McKaryss Fisher had three for Arlee, which was held to four points in the second half.
The Lady Vikings opened the week with a 44-19 win over Clark Fork on Thursday, followed by a 60-25 win at Hot Springs on Friday.
Carlee Fryberger scored 15 against Clark Fork and sister Connor Fryberger added 14 points and seven rebounds. The Cats mustered just two points each in the opening and closing periods.
A 25-6 third-period run put Charlo over the top at Hot Springs. Connor Fryberger led the way with 14 points, Liev Smith and Mila Hawk each scored nine, and Hayleigh Smith added eight.
Lady Pirates’ season stalls
The Polson girls missed a pair of games last week after a member of the team tested positive for COVID-19, forcing the entire team into quarantine.
Last Thursday’s game at Frenchtown was cancelled and will not be made up.
Saturday’s game at Libby was postponed and then rescheduled for Feb. 2.
Polson is back in action this week with four home games in eight days, starting with Stevensville on Thursday. That’s followed by Whitefish on Saturday, Bigfork on Tuesday and Dillon on Thursday.
Chiefs down Loggers, stumble at Frenchtown
The Ronan boys earned a 54-43 conference road win at Libby on Thursday, but couldn’t keep the momentum going Saturday.
The Chiefs (6-1) took their first loss of the season against the Broncs, a 56-40 defeat in which Frenchtown pulled away in the fourth period of what had been a tight contest. The Chiefs were outscored 18-7 in the fourth.
Elijah Tonasket had a team-high 13 points, while Girma Detwiler added seven points and six rebounds.Zarec Couture contributed eight points and five rebounds in the loss.
No stats were available for Thursday’s game at Libby.
Pirates get by Broncs
The Polson boys overcame a 27-18 halftime deficit to score a 52-50 win over Frenchtown on Thursday at Pablo. Polson stole a Frenchtown inbound pass with 4.1 seconds left to secure the win after outscoring the Broncs 21-7 in the third quarter and 34-23 in the second half.
Jarrett Wilson had 18 points for Polson, Darian Williams scored 10 and Colton Graham added nine. Brandon Finley led Frenchtown with 12 points, Devin Shelton scored 11 and Jeff Jacobs had 10.
Bulldogs take two
The Mission boys dominated rival Arlee on Jan. 12, taking a 45-25 lead into the half and coasting to a 80-52 win over the Warriors.
The Bulldogs got 17 points from Ross McPherson 17 and 13 each from John Komotios, Isaiah Nasewytewa and Zoran LaFrombois.
Levi Fullerton hit a trio of 3-pointers and led the Warriors with 17 points in the loss. Jace Arca scored eight points and Micah Johnson added seven for Arlee.
At home against Loyola on Thursday, LaFrombois was on fire, scoring 28 points in a 61-50 overtime win against the Rams. The sharpshooting sophomore guard hit nine of 10 free throws.
The Bulldogs managed just three points in the fourth period, but held the Rams to seven and sent the game to overtime. Mission scored 18 points in OT, the most of any period of the game.
Cedrick McDonald put down 10 points for Mission, which also got six each from Ross McPherson, Isaiah Nasewytewa and Layne Spidel.
Will Burns led Loyola with 19 points.
Lady Bulldogs split a pair
The Mission girls coasted to a 58-12 win over Arlee on Tuesday, led by Madyson Currie’s 13 points, 11 steals and eight rebounds. Cedar Hunt notched a double-double for Mission with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Eleven Lady Bulldogs contributed points in the win.
The Scarlets got two points each from Michaela Buck, McKirah Fisher, Lark Thomas, Princess Bolen and McKaryss Fisher.
Two days later, the Lady Bulldogs suffered a 51-33 loss at the hands of Loyola-Sacred Heart. Brooke Twite scored 12 points and Natalie Clevenger had 10 to pace Loyola.
Mission trailed by six points at half, but the game got away from them in the second half, when they were outscored 24-12.
Sydney Brander led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points. Izzy Evans added 10, and Kason Page scored seven.
Vikings take down Warriors
The Charlo boys edged rival Arlee 49-44 Saturday night to wrap up their week at 1-2.
Keaton Piedalue scored a game-high 17 points against Arlee, whild Ben Harlow led the Warriors with 11 points.
Arlee held a one-point lead after three periods, but Charlo closed out the game on a 15-9 run for the win.
Roper Edwards scored nine for Charlo, which also got seven points from Phil Marquez and six each from Stetson Reum and Wesley Anderson.
Micah Johnson and Jace Arca each scored eight points for Arlee. Levi Fullerton and Dallas Swab each added six.
On Friday at Hot Springs, the Vikings fell behind early and rallied back, but it wasn’t enough. Hot Spring led 32-16 at half. Charlo scored 24 in the final period to close the gap, ultimately losing 55-52.
Roper Edwards (17 points) and Phil Marquez (16) led the Vikings in scoring.
Edwards again led the way with 17 points and Nate Clark contributed 15 in a 65-43 loss to Clark Fork on Thursday. Clark went 3 for 5 from the 3-point line in the loss.
Clark Fork’s Carson Callison led all scorers with 22 points.
