Mariners close out regular season with split at Kalispell
KALISPELL — Oscar Kallis threw a five-hit shutout and the Kalispell A Lakers won the first game, before Mission Valley won a slugfest and salvaged a split of their doubleheader Sunday at Archie Roe Field.
Odin Erickson and James Moody drove in runs as the Lakers won the opener 2-0; Dawson DuMont had four doubles and drove in four runs as the Mariners took the nightcap 17-6.
Kallis struck out one while prevailing in a pitchers’ duel. The Mariners’ Xavier Fisher allowed three hits and four walks in six innings, striking out three.
Kallis also walked two, including one in the seventh inning, with two out. He then retired Alex Muzquiz on a fly to Henry Smith in center to preserve the win for the Lakers.
Mission Valley had its best chance in the sixth, bracketing a Lakers’ error with singles from Espn Fisher and Bryson Fisher. With the bases loaded Kallis induced a groundout to third.
Smith scored Kalispell’s first run: He singled, moved to third on Haiden Bunyea’s base hit and came home on Moody’s groundout.,
The second run came when Ostyn Brennan drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a hit batter and third on a sacrifice, then scored on Erickson’s groundout.
The Mariners’ 10-run third inning doomed the Lakers in the second game. DuMont hit a 2-run double that knotted the game at 2-2, Ethan McCauley added a 3-run double to put the Ms up 7-2, and DuMont added another RBI double and then came home on Espn Fisher’s 2-bagger to make it 10-2.
Mission Valley combined 15 hits with nine walks and three hit batsmen against four Lakers pitchers. Muzquiz added a homer and a double in the win; Dylan Davis drove in three; Muzquiz and DuMont each scored four times.
The Mariners finished the season with a record of 32-15 overall and 11-7 in conference play. They will be the third seed out of the West at the A district tournament that was set to begin Wednesday in Missoula, after the Leader went to print.
