M-A-C earns program-best second at state

The Mission-Arlee-Charlo softball team made a heckuva run at the state title, but ultimately couldn’t get past host Florence-Carlton.

M-A-C wrapped up the season as Class B/C runner-up with a final record of 24-6-1.

Sophomore pitcher Kooper Page returned to the field after sitting out the divisional tournament with a sore shoulder. She earned a pair of wins against Stillwater, once in the semifinals and another in the third-place play-in game Saturday to give the Lady Bulldogs one last shot at Florence.

In the title game, needing a pair of wins over the Falcons, M-A-C held a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, when Florence rallied for six runs.

Freshman Izzy Evans drove in all three of M-A-C’s early runs on a double to score Jerny Crawford in the first and a single in the third that plated Crawford and pitcher Liev Smith.

Earlier in the tournament, Evans hit a dramatic walk-off grand slam for a 7-6 win over defending champion Huntley Project in the tournament opener.

M-A-C and Florence also met in Friday’s undefeated semifinal, with the Falcons prevailing 12-5.

Jerny Crawford went 11 for 20 with a pair of homers for the tournament. Evans finished 8 for 14 with three home runs and 14 RBIs. Liev Smith went 8 for 17 with three doubles.

The second-place finish at state is the best in the program’s history. Liev Smith is the only senior on the team, so the Lady Bulldogs should be top contenders again next season for head coach Shane Reum.
