Case of the stolen chicks

There is a chicken thief at large in Lake County. Some time during the evening of June 9 an unknown number of people climbed onto the roof of the Bargain Barn in Polson and made off with the two cast-aluminum chicks perched there.

“I felt a little silly calling this one in to the police dispatcher,” said Bargain Barn employee Dana Brewer. “It was hard to explain that I wasn’t talking about real chickens.”

The chicks measure approximately 18 to 24 inches high and are painted yellow.

A special wagon will carry Charlo’s 2001 honorary Citizens of the Year, Stuart and Nancy Fryberger, during a parade that will begin at 1 p.m. July 4.

“Stuart and Nancy have been involved in many school and community activities throughout their years in Charlo,” said Linda Johnson, secretary of the Charlo Rec Club. “We celebrate the Frybergers for their lifelong dedication and commitment to the Charlo community.”

Hydroplane weekend a big success

June 24, 1982 Flathead Courier

The western Divisional inboard hydroplane races in Polson went so well last weekend that Race Chairman Lou Marchello and several of the racers are discussing placing a bid for the national inboard championships in 1984. Marchello said the racers are behind them 100 percent. He credited the success of the races to the community support.

“I’m just very pleased we had such tremendous help from the people concerned.”

About 72 boats entered the races, held Saturday and Sunday at the regatta grounds.
