Softball Roundup: Pirates, Bulldogs play to a draw

The Polson Lady Pirates faced their toughest challenge thus far this season when they ran into Lake County rival Mission-Arlee-Charlo on Saturday at the Frenchtown Invitational.

Polson (11-0-1) had won by 10-run ruling in each of their preceding games against Class A competition, but the clash with Class B/C M-A-C (13-2-1) stretched into extra innings and ended in a 2-2 tie when time ran out.

M-A-C starter Kooper Page fanned a dozen Lady Pirate batters, while Katelyne Druyvestein struck out a half dozen Bulldog batters and induced six groundouts and nine flyouts.

Both teams advanced runners into scoring position in the opening frame, but failed to score. In the top half of the third, the Lady Bulldogs scored twice off doubles by Liev Smith and Hayleigh Smith to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the same inning, the Lady Pirates responded by advancing two runners into scoring position with nobody out. But M-A-C turned a double play, and a strikeout snuffed the threat.

In the bottom half of the sixth, Druvestein helped her own cause when she reached base safely off a well placed bunt. Lexy Orien evened things with a one-out, two-run homer.

Prior to their brawl with the Bulldogs, the Lady Pirates had outscored their trio of tournament opponents by fivefold, 47-9. Leadoff Josie Caye and cleanup batter Orien both parked pitches on the other side of the outfield fence during first inning action against Fergus, while freshman pinch hitter Nikki Kendall hit her first varsity career home run several innings later. Kendall enjoyed her inaugural varsity tater so much that she hit another homer the following game.

Maidens go 2-2

Ronan turned up the offense and played a few close games last week, winning two and losing two.

The Maidens (4-8) opened with a 17-7 win over Hamilton on Friday at the Frenchtown Invitational. Ronan cranked out 23 hits in the win, including four from LouRasia Weatherwax.

Ronan edged Corvallis 7-6 later Friday to go 2-0 on the tournament’s first day.

Day 2 was tougher, as the Maidens lost 10-9 to Stevensville and 10-5 to Butte Central.
