Track Roundup: State field taking shape

by SCOT HEISEL
Lake County Leader | May 19, 2021 9:00 AM

With divisional track meets coming this weekend, time is running out for Lake County athletes to qualify for state meets the following weekend.

So far 18 athletes are listed as state qualifiers. Most of those are set for sure. A few have yet to set a qualifying mark but are likely to be invited to fill out the field of competitors.

Five male athletes from Polson have qualified. Senior Mason Sloan’s top mark in the 3200 is about 7 seconds short of the qualifying mark, but he’s currently listed in the field for the state event at montanatrack.com. Sloan can lock up a spot with a time of 10:15 or better this weekend at Class A divisionals at Columbia Falls.

Fellow Pirate Jarrett Wilson, a sophomore, has qualified in the 300 hurdles. Wilson recorded the third-best time of the season, 42.19 seconds, during Polson’s dual at Columbia Falls last week. Wilson’s also a member of Polson’s 4X100 relay team, along with Austin Luper, Cassidy Hendricks and Lucas Targerson, which beat Columbia Falls by 0.07 seconds Thursday. Both teams qualified for state in the process.

Ronan looks to be sending Lake County’s largest team to state this year. Five boys and two girls are poised to compete in the Class A state tournament May 27-29 at Laurel.

Senior Brant Heiner is a lock in the 1600 and 3200, while fellow senior Michael Irvine currently is listed as a provisional competitor in the 1600. Irvine’s best time is just 0.13 seconds short of the 4:40 qualifying time.

Senior Girma Detwiler has the second best mark of the season in the triple jump, 44-02, just a half an inch behind top qualifier Hunter Bear Cloud of Hardin.

Ronan junior Peyton Cates is the top Class A qualifier so far in the high jump. Cates cleared 6-05 at the Lake County Meet on May 6 at Ronan. Rounding out the Ronan boys qualifiers is senior Daniel Kelsch, whose javelin mark of 153-05 is fifth best in Class A so far.

Ronan sophomore Leina Ulutoa is coming off a win in the triple jump last weekend at the A-B-C meet in Polson. Her season-best mark of 34-175 at the Dilly Bar Invitational on April 17 qualified her for state.

Fellow Maiden Lindsay Brooks currently is a provisional qualifier in the high jump. Her top jump of the season, 5 feet, is an inch short of the qualifying mark.

The Mission Bulldogs have five athletes listed as Class B state competitors so far. Senior Layne Spidel is a lock in the 400 and the 4X400 relay team, which also includes Charles Adams, Andrew Rush and Isaiah Nasewytewa. Rush has qualified in four events. Along with the relay event, he’s set to compete in the 3200, 1600 and 800, though he’s still about a second short on his best time in the 800 to be considered a lock.

Senior Sydney Brander is poised to be the Bulldogs’ only female athlete. She’s recorded the sixth-best time in the 100 (13.10), the second-best mark in the long jump (17-03.5) and the third-best mark in the triple jump (34-11.5).

The county has just one Class C state competitor so far, but she’s certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Charlo senior Carlee Fryberger has excelled all season, her swan song in a storied Lady Viking career.

Fryberger has qualified in five events and has recorded either the top mark or the second-best mark in all five.

She will compete in the 100, 200, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the triple jump at the state meet May 27-29 at Missoula. If all goes well, it’s possible she could carry Charlo to a top team finish all alone.

She also finished first in all five events last weekend at the 14C district meet in Missoula.

Columbia Falls sweeps Polson in dual

Polson’s boys 4X100 relay team has its best showing of the season and qualified for state during a dual meet at Columbia Falls on Thursday.

Jarrett Wilson also won the 100 with a time of 11.60, while teammate Lucas Targerson was third at 11.72. Wilson also won the 300 hurdles and the high jump.

Polson also got a win from Austin Looper in the 400.

Polson girls took the top four spots in the 100, with freshmen Michelle Dale and Hannah Simpson finishing 1-2 ahead of senior Hallie Moss (third) and freshman Alexandra Dupuis, who won the 400.

The WildKats dominated the team scores, with the boys winning 106-42 and the girls winning 105-44.

Mission boys, girls fourth at 7B districts

Senior Sydney Brander won three events and sophomore Andrew Rush won the boys 800 during the 7B district meet Saturday at Eureka.

Brander was first in the 100, the long jump and the triple jump. She’s qualified to compete at the state meet in all three events. Her mark of 17-03.5 in the long jump was her best of the season and the second-best among Class B athletes this year.

Mission sprinters Charles Adams (100) and Layne Spidel (200) each had second-place finishes.

Both the boys and girls finished fourth in the team standings, with Bigfork easily taking both team titles.
