Pirates leap into season with big win

One week into the 2021 football season, the Polson Pirates already enjoy a 2-0 record.
Junior quarterback Jarrett Wilson threw five touchdown passes and ran for two more scores as the Pirates cruised to a 49-21 win against class AA Glacier High’s junior varsity squad Saturday at home.
The game was scheduled early last week after class A Butte Central announced it would forfeit the season opener at Polson due to rules infractions by several players.
Wilson and his favorite target, senior Colton Graham, picked up where they left off last season, when they proved to be among the state’s most prolific tandems. Both were named to the class A all-state team following the 2020 season.
Graham caught four of Wilson’s five TD passes Saturday. Robert Perez pulled down the other, a 36-yard toss in the second quarter that led to a 35-7 halftime lead for Polson.
Polson scored on the game’s first play from scrimmage on a 50-yard screen pass from Wilson to Alex Muzquiz, but a penalty nullified the touchdown. The Pirates quickly marched down for the season’s first touchdown, a 7-yard toss from Wilson to Graham.
Wilson and Graham also played in the defense secondary and were among several Polson players who played both sides of the ball.
Glacier quarterback Isaak Keim had two TD tosses, one to Austin Robinson, the other to Alex Hausmann. Xander Stout had a two-yard run for the Wolfpack’s third score.
Polson travels to Stevensville for a game Friday night before hosting East Helena on Sept. 10. The Vigilantes football program is in its first year, and is under the guidance of former Mission coach Tyler Murray.
