Cross country: Polson teams head to Washington

The Polson cross country team traveled out of state last weekend to compete at the Highlander Invitational hosted by Shadle Park High School in Spokane.

The event covers a shorter 2.5-mile distance rather than the usual 5k (3.1 miles).

Polson’s four sophomore boys managed to finish fifth out of 13 teams and were led by Kai McDonald's 15th-place finish.

The junior boys all crossed the line in the top 40, with Drifter Skillicorn finishing ninth.

Ryan Dupuis wrapped up the day in the senior boys race by just tucking into the top 20.

Hayden Clairmont was most improved with a sub-20 5k equivalent time that cut 1:27 from his Ronan Canal finish last Friday.

The Pirate girls all ran in the combined race (schools under 600 enrollment and JV teams from larger schools) and stayed very near the front throughout the race. They finished with three in the top 10. Ashtyn Wagner and Halle Heninger battled side by side and surged at the finish to take third and fourth out of 115 runners and drop significant time from their 2019 efforts.

Thanks to all the enthusiastic parents who made the trek to Spokane to cheer on the team. There are now lots of great trip photos on the team Shutterfly site.

Polson was set to visit Mission on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
