Pirates rout Ronan to remain undefeated
Junior quarterback Jarrett Wilson threw six touchdown passes and rushed for another score as Polson thrashed Lake County rival Ronan 62-8 at home Friday night.
Dawson Dumont and Xavier Fisher each had a pair of touchdown receptions for the Pirates (4-0, 1-0).
Wilson completed 28 of 39 passes for 370 yards. For the season he has passed for 1,182 yards in three games with 19 TD passes and no interceptions, according to Polson offensive coordinator Ryan Antos.
Ronan (0-3, 0-3) received the opening kick and gained one first down before punting.
The Pirates followed with a 75-yard drive capped by a 30-yard screen pass from Wilson to Alex Muzquiz.
The Chiefs’ second possession ended with a turnover when senior lineman Braunson Henriksen sacked Ronan quarterback Caleb Cheff and forced a fumble, which was recovered by Wilson from the safety position.
Polson went on a 71-yard scoring drive that ended with a four-yard TD pass from Wilson to Fisher with 52 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Pirates then recovered the first of two successful onside kick attempts on the night and managed to score again two plays later when Wilson hit Dumont for a 27-yard score to put Polson up 21-0 with 9 seconds to go in the quarter.
Polson led 35-0 at the half, then scored 21 unanswered points in the third to go up 56-0.
Cheff had several big QB keepers on the Chiefs’ lone scoring drive, which also was helped by a pass interference call and a personal foul against Polson.
Cheff hit Ted Coffman in the corner of the end zone with a 14-yard scoring pass that just cleared the defense. Cheff then ran over the tackle for a successful two-point conversion.
Wilson stayed in the game at QB most of the second half. He was replaced by sophomore Brock Henrickson on the Pirates’ final drive, which began on the Polson 43-yard line with 5:45 on the clock.
Henrickson completed two short passes and lobbed a deep pass that fell incomplete. With the clock winding down, the Pirates continued to march. They reached first-and-goal after an 18-yard run by Keyen Nash on a counter play. After a pair of unsuccessful dive plays, Henrikson punched in the final score on a QB keeper as time expired.
Ronan hosts Browning for its homecoming game Friday night, while Polson travels to Libby.
