Softball Roundup: Lady Bulldogs hold off Maidens

At St. Ignatius for a Mission Valley rivalry wrangle, the visiting Maidens of Ronan and the host Lady Bulldogs engaged in a classic cross-classification county clash between two evenly matched softball squads.

Mission-Arlee-Charlo put together a pair of productive early frames to stake themselves to a 4-0 advantage after two. Ronan cut the deficit in half when they scored a pair on successive hits by the top third of their order. But M-A-C answered with two more runs to maintain the margin 6-2.

Ronan leadoff hitter LouRasia Weatherwax went yard by mashing the first team tater of the season for two runs during top half of the fourth action, closing the gap 6-4. The Maiden defense retired the side in the bottom half of the fourth on infield groundouts. But while M-A-C batters added an insurance run in each of their half of the following two innings, the Maidens only placed a single runner on board while a trio of deep flies resulted in outs.

Despite the lack of plate productivity the previous pair of innings, the Maidens were poised for a rally in the top half of the seventh. Ashlie Welker led off the inning by lacing a liner toward the gap between short and right field. But Lady Bulldog shortstop Jerny Crawford ranged to her right to snare it. Ronan nevertheless succeeded in denting the deficit by scoring a run while also working two more runners onto the basepath. With two outs, they brought the tying run to the plate in an effort to extend the contest. But relief pitcher Izzy Evans yanked the rug out from under the threat by securing a game-ending strikeout.

In other action last week, Polson defeated Hamilton 16-0 in three innings April 5 at home. Statistics for that game were not available as the Leader went to press.
