Legal Tip of the Week: Housing instability
Did you know there are two Montana programs designed to help individuals who are worried about or facing housing instability?
- The Montana Eviction Intervention Project (MEIP) has resources to help tenants facing an eviction, including financial assistance, legal advice and representation in court. The program is free and individuals can apply by contacting Montana Legal Services Association (MLSA) at 800- 666-6899 or apply online at www.mtlsa.org/.
- Similarly, the Montana Emergency Rental Assistance (MERA) program can cover past rent and utilities dating back to April 1, 2020. The rental assistance program is available to Montanans who have experienced financial hardships directly, indirectly, or during the COVID-19 pandemic and are at risk of housing instability. This program can even help pay for the internet. To find out if you qualify and to apply, go to www.housing.mt.gov/Rental-Assistance/Montana-Emergency-Rental-Assistance-Program
