Arlee wins Lake County rivalry matchup against Charlo
Despite 23 points from Charlo’s Keaton Piedalue, Arlee was able to take home the Lake County bragging rights with an 83-72 victory in non-league play in Charlo Saturday. The win improved the Warriors to 3-1 on the year.
“It was a really good atmosphere,” Alree head coach Shawn Matt said. “There was no real negative energy, everybody on both sides played hard.”
Arlee was led by Ben OldPerson Harlow’s 23 points and Kaiden Ostby’s 15 points. Otsby was 2-for-3 from three-point range in the matchup. The Warriors also had 11 steals in the matchup and shot 8-for-18 from the arc.
“I just think our constant pressure was a big factor,” Matt said. “We played pretty much full court, man-to-man. We definitely left some points out there with some missed layups but I was proud that our pressure was constant.”
Charlo had a 21-19 lead after the first quarter, but Arlee went into the locker room at halftime with a 37-36 lead. The Warriors increased their lead by ten points in the third quarter and then played the Vikings evenly in the fourth.
Hayden Hollow notched 19 points for Charlo (1-2), while Wesley Anderson added 15 points and Steson Reum scored 11. Charlo shot 4-for-13 from three-point range.
The battle of the boards were evenly matched as Arlee hauled in 40 boards and Charlo had 39 rebounds. Harlow hauled in nine rebounds for Arlee, while Piedalue collected 10 rebounds for Charlo.
The game was a bounce back for Arlee from Friday night’s loss to Loyola-Sacred Heart by a score of 78-34.
When Arlee and Charlo last met on Jan. 28 last season, Arlee was able to come away with the 54-50 victory, and won an earlier 2021 matchup against the Vikings 65-43.
The victory for the Warriors came with a price, however, as Dallas Schwab suffered a thigh contusion and could miss a few games in the meat of Arlee’s schedule.
“That muscle has quite the knot in it,” Matt said. “Dallas is a team captain and has the type of mindset that he wants to be out there with his boys. We have some good young kids that can step up but he really is a true leader out there.”
Arlee played at league foe Anaconda on Tuesday - a game Matt said was very important if the Warriors wanted favorable positioning in the standing - and then will host Florence Carlton on Jan. 6, and travel to Plains on Jan. 12 and Mission on Jan. 13.
