Lady Vikings' rally falls short in OT loss
CHARLO — The Lady Vikings battled back from a 13-point deficit to force overtime but ultimately came up just short in a nonconference clash with unbeaten Seeley-Swan on Friday night.
Charlo (16-2) had a tough time finding good shots early on, while Seeley (18-0) capitalized on several turnovers to build an 11-5 lead after the first period. They extended the lead to 26-17 by halftime. Seeley’s Sariah Maughan banked a jumper with just over 5 minutes remaining in the third to put her team up 32-19.
The Lady Vikings answered with a 10-1 rally to close the gap to 33-29 heading into the final period of regulation. Hayleigh Smith hit several jumpers and Charlo hit their free throws during the run. Smith finished with nine points.
Senior Mila Hawk took over in the fourth with a string of jumpers. She hit two free throws to give Charlo its first lead, 38-36 with 1:29 remaining.
Kassidi Cox made a free throw to tie the game at 39-all with 7 seconds remaining, but her second free throw was no good and Hawk was called for her fifth foul in the ensuing scrum.
Charlo’s Sidney Bauer hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 40-all with 3.5 seconds remaining.
The Lady Blackhawks blanked Charlo in overtime, however.
Cox committed her fifth foul, leaving Charlo without its two top scorers, and the Lady Vikings missed six free throws in overtime.
Hawk finished with 20 points, while Cox scored six for Charlo.
Despite the loss, the Lady Vikings are once again conference champs under first-year head coach Hayley Voegele, and they’ll receive a first-round bye at the district tournament this weekend at Ronan.
