Class C Roundup: Charlo teams second at districts
RONAN — The Charlo basketball programs came painfully close to pulling off a sweep of 14C district titles at Ronan last weekend. A couple of close losses in the title games foiled those plans, but both teams head to this weekend’s Western C divisional tournament at Frenchtown as a No. 2 seed.
The Vikings advanced to Saturday’s district championship game against St. Regis with a 55-43 semifinal win over Hot Springs. The Lady Vikings also defeated Hot Springs, 42-21, in the semifinals Friday to move into the championship game against Alberton-Superior.
The Charlo girls came to the tournament with just two losses, one against class B Mission very early in the season, and an overtime loss to unbeaten Seeley-Swan just a few weeks back.
Charlo (17-3) had faced the Bobcats (12-6) twice during the regular season and came away with 12- and 15-point margins of victory. The third meeting was much closer, however, with neither team leading by more than six points.
Charlo’s Mila Hawk rolled in a jumper at the buzzer to tie the game at 22-22 as the third period ended.
After Kassidi Cox hit a 3-pointer for Charlo in the final period, Superior immediately answered with their own three to pull within two points.
Charlo’s Katelyn Young hit a clutch 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining to tie the game, but the Bobcats found a shot under the basket as time expired to pull off the 34-32 upset.
Charlo will face Manhattan Christian at 11 a.m. Thursday in the divisional opener at Frenchtown.

The Charlo boys (12-8) looked to pull off an upset of their own in the late game, but came up just short in a 51-50 loss to the Tigers (17-3).
St. Regis jumped out to an 11-2 lead to start the game, but Charlo closed the gap to 13-7 to start the second period. The Tigers took a 27-17 lead into the half and pushed it to 38-27 heading into the fourth.
The Vikings slowly closed the gap with pressure defense, a string of turnovers and timely shooting.
Hayden Hollow hit a wide-open 3-pointer with 7:20 remaining to cut the lead to eight points. Tucker Love scored five straight points on a free throw, a jumper and a putback to make it 48-43 with two minutes left.
Coyle Nagy later cut the lead to three with a free throw in the final minutes, but it was as close as the Vikings would get until Keaton Piedalue connected on a long 3-point bank shot as the buzzer sounded, bringing Charlo as close to the lead as they’d been all night with the 51-50 final.
The Vikings lost handily in the teams’ two previous meetings, but Saturday they stayed close with the district champs. They’ll face the Manhattan Christian boys at 2 p.m. Thursday at Frenchtown.
