Museum planning winter activities event

A new winter event is coming to the Miracle of America Museum.

A special winter activities day is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15 at the museum, located at 36094 Memory Lane, Polson.

For the day, rides will be available on several vintage snow machines, including a 1926 Model T snowmobile, a Polaris Snowplane, a Tucker Snowcat and two snow crawlers formerly used at Glacier National Park.

Warm beverages will be available for purchase.

Standard admission rates of $5 for kids age 2-12 and $10 for those age 13 or older will apply. However, the event is intended to be a fundraiser for the museum, and additional donations would be appreciated.

Anyone who would like to volunteer to operate the machinery is asked to call museum founder and CEO Gil Mangels at 406-883-6804. Members of local snow-related groups who would like to participate are also encouraged to call Gil.

Visit www.miracleofamericamuseum.org for more information.

Winter hike at Owen Sowerwine

The Flathead Audubon Society is offering a free guided winter hike through the Owen Sowerwine Natural Area just east of Kalispell along the Flathead River from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 15.

Conservation educator and longtime teaching naturalist Denny Olson will lead the hike (weather permitting) and will discuss winter birds, bird songs, tracking, botanizing and seat-of-the-pants interpretation. This is one of the best spots in the area to see Pileated and other woodpeckers, many kinds of chickadees, Bohemian and Cedar waxwings in flocks of thousands, Pine Grosbeaks and Townsend's Solitaires.

Dress warmly, bring binoculars and snow boots, and check with us on the need for snowshoes, if the snow is deep. Contact Denny at 406-249-3987 or denny@flatheadaudubon.org to sign up and get directions. Class size is limited and social distancing will be required.

Take the plunge for Special Olympics

The Flathead Rez Shiver in the River polar plunge is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29 at Riverside Park in Polson. Registered participants can create fundraising pages by visiting tinyurl.com/2p8t5uzb. All proceeds will benefit the Montana Special Olympics.
